Dilema

OK, next week, I am going camping for four days. Way too long to leave my peppers without watering them. Besides, it is still to cold out at night to leave them out over night. So, do I risk ridicule and complaining from the wife and take them along with us, or.....heck, I don't really have a good alternative.

The only thing I could think of would be to rig up some lighting indoors and put the plants in some trays that I can fill with about an inch of water so the peppers will bottom water while I am gone. But I am sure my plants have a big root system and that would likely kill all the roots at the bottom inch of my containers.

Do I trust my daughter to come over and water them.....ummmm NO!

I think the wife is just going to have to make room. What say you?

LOL, I've taken a bin full of tomato seedlings camping before. I did get some strange looks but it worked. At the very least, you'll have a good conversation opener. If you're talking about lugging five-ten gallon buckets around, then your wife is a saint.

Do you have any neighbors you can bribe to water them? Or can you work up some sort of temporary outdoor shelter for them, like a hoop house?

Rig up a capillary mat set up. May not be ideal, but should work enough for a few days.

Get you priorities right and cancel the camping trip. Just kidding.

I am thinking about having the daughter come over one day to water them.

But, the last time I tried thinking, it caused me a lot of trouble. I have been a lot better off since I gave up thinking.

I agree with Mark, water them well, keep them under/by good light and you'll be fine.

Water them well. Have your daughter come by at day two, and send you pics of the plants and the potting mix, then you can decide if she should apply any water.

Yah, I keep forgetting about all this tech stuff. Funny how a cell phone can assist in growing peppers. I will do just that. Put them as good as I can near a window and have my daughter come by and water them after texting me a picture or two.

    Thanks everyone.

When I travel in the summer, I drag my pots into the shady area of the lawn. When the sprinklers run, it waters the pots a bit. Plus, they're in the shade for a few days so they need less water. Clearly the lawn is not a priority.

Ah, never mind. You said too cold for the yard. I always fail to consider cold as a thing.

May have overlooked it but how many plants are we talking about and how big r the pots?

    I have 10 full size (15 to 20") plants and 8 seedlings.

I am just going to put them in a place where they will get some "indirect" sunlight for the four days and then have my daughter water them after a couple days.

Outside is NOT an option. Low tonight is 34 and low tomorrow night is 32. So, the summer growing season is not here for me yet.

Bruce - Since your peppers will be fine in the indirect light in the house and your daughter stopping by, now to ensure you don't have another dilemma yourself while camping. Don't forget to pack your long underwear, wool socks, thermal shirts and of course a sleeping bag rated for winter weather. Enjoy the Great Outdoors!!

Yah, well, I went an bought 8 more pepper plants this afternoon. Sheesh.

I put them under my timed lights on the heat mats down stairs though so other than watering, they will be fine.

I guess it is time to start dealing with the camping supplies.

How can you say 8 more and not share what varieties? My guess is you go to HHW? Enjoy camping!

    Yah, HHW.

The place I got them at last year didn't carry them this year....they told me they would when I talked to them a month ago....I had to go to another place and the plants were small and three times more expensive. So, last week I bought 8. I decided I wanted a few more so I got 4 more along with some Hot Bananas that were bigger.

I have it all figured out for next year. I will start some of my own HHW around mid March to early April. By mid April I move my other plants (started in mid Feb) upstairs so I can take them in and out during warm afternoons. Then the HHW's can have the lights and heat mats. And that way I don't have to deal with the garden centers around here hoping to find them and find decent sized ones in the middle of May. My other plants are 15 to 20" tall. The HHW seedlings are about 3".

By the way, it is cold as snot here now (low 30's next couple of nights) but a week from now, it looks like I may be able to plant out after my camping trip.

That's a lot of HHW, I think I will pick up a plant this weekend since I gave away all my chocolate habs. I will have to search your quick pickle recipie you posted awhile back. It's crazy how well your plants are doing, but in your zone that's awesome and exactly what you need for good harvests. Yeah the week after looks real nice for you. I plan to plant out after this weekend as its looking good for us over here. Did you pick up the banana peppers to compare to the HHW or do you also like the flavor and mix them with the HHW in the pickle?

I got the hot bananas because they are similar but they are about 2-3 weeks ahead of the little bitty HHW's that I could find. They both make good cold canned pepper slices. But I do prefer the HHW's a bit more.

Bruce, sounds like you've got your situation figured out for this trip. Incidentally, I am currently on the way home from a 2 week camping trip. In addition to having a critter sitter, I also hire a plant sitter. Easier said than done, but start looking now in prep of your next trip. Sending texts with photos helped me monitor plants back home, as well.

I hope the trip went well. This doesn't much seem like camping weather though.

I am leaving the morning. It was snowing today and this is the forecast for tonight:

    Freeze Warning

Issued at: 11:29 am CDT on May 14, 2016, expires at: 8:00 AM CDT on May 15, 2016

...Freeze warning now in effect from midnight tonight to 8 am CDT
    Sunday...
    * temperatures will fall into the mid to upper 20s.
    * Cold sensitive plants will be killed if left outdoors and
unprotected. Bring them indoors or cover them.
    Precautionary/preparedness actions...
A freeze warning means sub-freezing temperatures are imminent or
highly likely. These conditions will kill crops and other
    sensitive vegetation.

Yep, it was a nice trip camping & spring fly-fishing in national forests in NM and AZ. Got down into the mid-20s for us while we were out there. Beautiful sunny weather during the day. Big change from my Mississippi weather back home.
