Need help with shutter/door color

last modified: 10 years ago

Hi everyone!

My husband and I are on a super budget and really only have enough wiggle room to update the color of the shutters and/or door(s) (garage door too if you feel that would help) on our new home. Does anyone have any ideas on colors that would work well for a house that has a brick and white siding exterior? Thanks so much for the advice!

Maybe someone will come along with a photoshop program that can show what your home would look like if the brick was painted a pale beige and the shutters were beige, too. The brick you have now accents an out-of-date look that was popular in the 60's.

Leave brick alone.... Painting hurts brick and adds maintenance... However I too think a blue/ green would look nice!

Embrace your classic red brick. Traditional would be black for shutters and door but leave garage door white. I would get rid of the ones near the door. Green, blues and teal would give a colorful update. Some shades of gold or yellow could work, I think those shades in Mia's pictures would be best.

Often I try to discourage Houzzers from painting brick...but in your case there is very little brick and with the style of your home and color of the brick it will make an amazing difference if you decide to paint. Here's a Before and After

The brick trim on your home was never a good look--not even when the home was new.

Red door. Black shutters. Brick stays. Beautiful house. Love the tree and the yard!

I agree with LeeLee. Paint the brick. Add some color to the door and black or cedar shutters. I plan on painting my brick house too in the future. Is there an app that allows you to see it beforehand?

Beautiful home. Although I am a huge fan of painting outdated brick here I would embrace it. This home leans toward modern with the garage roof line. I would remove the shutters and stay away from county or colonial enhancements. Paint the door a lovely tangerine add modern house numbers bright pots of flowers.

Man, your house was fun to work on. EVERY color looks good. (Well, I didn't try the reds and oranges, but pretty much every blue and green seemed to work.)

I also would remove the shutters from the door, and I'd probably paint the door and shutters the same. Here are some renderings; maybe they'll help you narrow it down.

My sister had the same garage doors as you and she added faux Windows and new handles. It's looks gorgeous now! Google it.

Also, fixer upper paints brick houses a lot on their show. Look up some of their before and after photos. They come out beautiful!
