Before and After: Master Bathroom Transformation
Here is our 1990 era master bathroom. It was carpeted (ack!), the lighting was dreadful, and there was not near enough storage. I came to hate overmount sinks and gold-toned everything.
This two-person turquoise jetted tub emptied our hot water heater before it was full; we rarely used it. It was also a bear to clean. We removed it, but added a one-person jetted tub to our second bathroom.
The shower stall was okay, but had no bench or ledge. Additionally, the cultured marble wall and floor had cracks in them.
There was no door to the bathroom, only this arched entry with saloon doors - not adequate at all. If you look closely, you can see that there was a step up at the arched doorway. The pocket door to the toilet room (center of photo) didn't work and was stuck open.
AFTER:
Voila. What a difference! The step-up floor was removed and the ceiling height is the same throughout. We added five ceiling pot lights and an LED light strip in the toe kick area where it serves as a terrific night light.
Our contractor is also a cabinet maker. My husband and I came up with the design for our vanity after perusing hundreds of Houzz photos, and Gene George custom made the cabinetry from cherry wood. The price of this prefabricated marble top compared favorably to quartz or granite vanity tops. The mirrors are from Pottery Barn with the faucets, sconces, window covering, and floor tile from Home Depot.

We love the no lip shower with frameless glass surround. The bench seat and safety grab bars will be useful in our dotage. Marble-look ceramic shower tiles and floor tiles are from Home Depot. The glass accent tile is from www.allmarbletiles.com
A big splurge is this make-up vanity area. I found a matching trifold mirror on ebay. Our contractor installed a pull-out hamper (on the right under the tower) and a pull-out grooming organizer with power strip and holders for curling iron and blow dryers.
Our pocket door now slides closed as it should. We added a between-the-studs storage cabinet custom made by our contractor. It holds toilet paper and toilet cleaning materials. I can never have enough storage!
We love our new bathroom. Finally we have more than enough storage, undermount sinks, and a sleek, modern look. The final cost of this remodel was less than $30,000 with us designing and buying the fixtures, tile, and accents ourselves.
