Tree damaged in storm

Greetings.

I am new to the PNW and my experience is more with eastern hardwoods.

We've had two bad windstorms with tree damage since I've been here. The last one was this past weekend.

This is my favorite tree...not sure why. It's about 100 or so feet tall. The top 18-20 feet sheered off. The base of the piece is about 5 inches in diameter. It's like a whole tree came off the top.

I love this tree. Will it live? What can I do for it?

I don't know if you can see...there's a volunteer growing up at the base. Should I remove it?

The one neighbor says the winds are doing more damage now as the canopy has changed so much. It seems like a cycle...trees get damaged, then homeowners decide to have more trees removed, which makes it worse.

Both to the north and south a couple homeowners are removing multiple dozens of trees like this. Basically clearing an acre or so of land right in the middle of the canopy. I'm surprised to hear so many chain saws during the day.

Anyway, any insight is appreciated.
