Most fan/fixtures do a poor job of both. Perhaps a floor fan is the way to cover that brief transitional period?

As a woman of a certain age I love that we just added a ceiling fan to our bedroom. We did one with a light fixture also as our light is terrible in our bedroom, but in retrospect this was not needed as the light from it is quite bad. But as far as air flow and cooling the room (and me) down, I love it. Have only had it for a couple months so can't yet determine how helpful it will be in the summer months, but we will use AC once it gets really hot anyway.

Are you sure you're using the best bulbs? Our fan light is a joke (can hardly tell a difference between off/on) but someone recently suggested switching to LED. Haven't done that yet, but I suspect it'll increase brightness.

How big is the room? Our MBR is 14x16--we have 4 can lights in the corners and a ceiling fan/light in the middle. No strobe effect.

No, we do not have LED bulbs in the current fixture and could try that but we are putting pots in the ceiling in any case. Would have to measure my room to tell you the size. Perhaps that is the solution, putting the pots far enough away from the centre so as not to create the strobe effect and getting a nice looking fan/fixture for the centre of the room.

The problem with the floor fan, which is what has been suggested to me by the decorator, is that it is there on the floor and in the way. The ceiling fan is always out of the way.

We just get our floor fan out in spring and fall, but sure, then it has to have a place to disappear to. No perfect choices.

Where I live, you find ceiling fans in every room (even the bathroom), so my vote is to definitely keep the fan. I think the only advantage to it having a light kit (with the can lights installed) is for task or mood lighting. I usually turn our rinky dink fan light on in the evening when we're watching tv--not startling bright, but light enough to keep us awake.

Install the fan WITHOUT a light kit. The quality of light from the fans is never good. No strobing unless your fan blade is in front of the downlight. Do not draw attention to the fan if the ceiling is only 8' high. Consider a nicely designed ceiling hugger or the new bladeless fans, or enclosed ceiling fans.

If you are putting in recessed lighting which I am interpreting as the same thing as "pot lighting" that would be sufficient lighting. You would not even need a fan/light combination but instead could choose to keep a fan alone if you wanted it for cooling purposes. Lastly, there are many new options for different light bulb strengths and wattages that could help increase the light in a space.

Hi Beverly, do you know how these bladeless and enclosed fans compare in cooling potential to the typical ceiling fan and what about the noise factor? Our current fan is very quiet and very effective re cooling.

Hi Aspen, the issue with the strobe effect occurs when the blades of the fan are too close to the recessed lights. We could ensure that the pot lights are far enough away from the blades but then we would have no lighting in the centre of the room. I'm not certain that this would be a problem if we had sufficient other lighting and bedside lamps which we do not have now so I just don't know. I only know that the lighting in our room currently is horrible and can be quite depressing and frustrating, especially in the winter.

I'm afraid folks think that a ceiling fan light is sufficient for a room. Actually, it functions as ambient lighting, the kind you turn on to see how to get into the room in the dark. Once there, the fan light should be turned off in favor of task and accent lighting, which would be your night stand lamps, dimmable pot lights for overall mood, and accent lights highlighting the room's art or architectural features.
