knobs always remind me of apartments/rentals, so I prefer levers. Levers are also nice when your hands are full!

We just replaced all ours (replaced cheap brass knobs with satin nickel) but stuck with knobs. Patricia has a good point but I just wasn't as happy with the look, plus I see levers as things to get caught on (purse strap, etc) as I walk by. I've never actually lived with levers though, so I could be off here.

You'll also want to replace the hinges to match. I gotta admit, thought my husband was crazy for taking on this project, but it does refresh the home!

Thanks, everyone. @susanalanandwrigley - the previous owners painted over the hinges, so while I don't love that look, it's not terrible, and saves me from having to change the hinges at this time!

If you do not have children yet, they open levered doors very early in life! I go round

Levers when ever possible. So easy to live and work with.

Levers. We had the old cheap brass changed out to knobs due to budget. It looks nice but good levers would have been great. Use high door chains on exterior doors to keep toddlers from escaping.

If you will have a toddler in the house anytime soon go with knobs!! Our front door is a lever and my 18mo old lets herself outside in a flash if someone's eyes are not on her at all times!! Thankfully they aren't on any other doors in the house!

Knobs are timeless. Levers feel institutional to me, or at least like a "look" that will be passé in a few years.

I'd go with levers, just so much easier to work with when your hands are full. Also, I saw it on a Houzz thread a couple weeks ago, that knobs were banned from new construction homes in BC (Canada) due to safety concerns. I think this is something you can think about, levers are definitely easier to open if there was a fire hazard, also less problematic for people with bad wrists. It's probably true kids will be able to open the doors easier, but sometimes maybe that'd be a good thing. Even if you have knobs, you still have to baby-proof your house anyway.

I'm currently in the process of building our first house, and our builder also said levers are more popular now (we're in Boston area), and most people choose levers for the convenience not the look. I think knobs and levers can both look nice and bleh, so it really depends on what you want.

Levers. We have young kids and its no problem. Just teach them about what rooms are allowed, and place a latch high up near the top of the doors that you can't risk having them in.
