Maybe a large, mirror on the wall? It's all very monochromatic at the moment, maybe add some silver/ chrome accents? A large plant would be good too.

You do need to soften the furnishings and add some color by way of art works, throws, cushions, rugs, perhaps a runner for the dining table and definitely some greens.

Add rugs to define the areas between living room and dinning room.

A few throw pillows and a throw will go a long way to add some much needed color. Yellow, green, teal, or orange would make great accents colors and would make the room feel more comfortable. A bowl (in whatever accent color you choose) on the kitchen counter, a tray with candlesticks on the table, and a large plant will all help. Notice how the two accent colors are placed in the attached photo.

The TV is a bit too high. If it can bemoved down so the bottom is only 6' 8" above the media center it will be at a much more comfortable viewing height.

A drapery panels on either side of the window. Hang them high and wide to maximize the light. A large mirror hung opposite the window will double the light in the space making it feel larger.

You need fabric in the room to soften all the black lines. I think you need better lighting as well. The torch lights just do not do it. First I would hang a cool chandelier to define the living room. I like the one below because it doesn't scream formal dining. Then i would get a sofa table to define the living room. Now these two rooms look separate. The pic below shows you do not need color to warm up a space. It is about adding textures and layers. Adding some wood helps warm it up. Lamps with architecture to them. A subtle shade for a shaggy rug. And a cool piece of wall art.

It's difficult to see if you have other possibilities of placing your furniture, but the way you have arranged it now reminds me of a train. Everything is 'horizontal' and very much in line. I agree with janishill that your TV is a bit too high up. And Cynthia Celenza's idea of blowing up the photos and adding a pop of colour is great.

You could do with some softness in the room. Think about adding a lamp with a round shape, shapes provide softness as well as fabrics. Natural materials will do the same thing. Patterns and interesting shapes will add interest.

(I know you're not thinking of adding red, but this lamp is sooo gorgeous ;-) )

Your taste seems to be pared down and monochromatic. I like that but would like to build on it using stronger textures....
I feel the room is missing a focal point ... it should not be the TV on the wall. Can you find two vertical mirrored screens or tall black and white photos to place on either side of the TV so that you add height



To the right side, if you add the screens - then on that wall add the black and white photo or vice versa.


Already you will have filled up your wall with light and interest to deflect from the heaviness of the black around your sofa and tables.

Where the uplighter is, find a sculptural piece of driftwood that adds a visual cue of nature to interrupt the glamour and glitz monochrome

Continue with this either with some side lights on the sofa that will add vertical line and continue the theme.


Your dining room table needs to be dressed a little when not in use. Perhaps three varying height bell jars with black bases with green apples in them or just three cylindrical large vases with green apples to give a shot of colour
Bring that rappel over to a black low bowl on your kitchen counter with the green apples again...
(you can do this with lemons, or other fruits or vegetables with vivid colour to contrast)

I agree with others that you may consider colorful pillows and put couple framed prints. My preference is abstractions because it can be as colorful as you want or monochromatic as nessessary. This room cries out for a large brightly colored piece of art on that empty wall. Maybe a piece of pop art would work or something more more subtle and moody. Depends of your taste. Maybe have a look at the large Warhol prints on art.com. The monochromatic shade of the room create such a blank canvas for any large piece of art.

PS Also, have a look at something by Ellsworth Kelly or Roy Lichtenstein. Either would work here.

Yes, the room does not have a personality, too many dark, straight lines. Soft furnishings such as rugs, cushions, throws and curtains will help but really a change of sofa and table are desired. Changing the colours too, lighter colours, neutral and natural. The room is very formal looking, lined up and the television is too high, as pointed out. The pictures are better suited to the walls as mentioned but don't have to be lined up. You could try a mix as per the photo. Agree with the nature comment as natural textures and patterns can really bring warmth and interest to a room.

I like Prism Interior's gallery wall and Carolins arc lamp. Wall to wall white built-ins with well curated photos, books, and accessories on the shelves surrounding the TV would personalize the room and introduce some color and personality. You could paint the back of the built-ins in an accent color. A large square painting, series of paintings that you love in beautiful colors on the left wall would add a lot--abstract sunset or landscape perhaps to get the feeling of looking outside. . A round dining table would help the room gain some curves. That line-up of your couch, dining table, kitchen counter, TV--all big rectangles, mainly dark.

Sunset series would look good on the left wall along with Carolins red arc lamp. The other palette to consider for art, accessories, back of possible shelf system is taupe/black/turquoise or blue.
