It is one of the weedy members of the carrot family, maybe Anthriscus sylvestris, aka cow parsley. You will want to yank out before it flowers and sets seed. And it can develop a rather extensive and deep root system so beware :-)

With those round stems with purplish blotches and more finely divided and pointed foliage I actually think that was Hemlock, Conium maculatum, rather than Anthriscus sylvestris. So you are well shot of it.

Yikes, I used my bare hands to pull it out. I assume Hemlock is still considered poisonous. I will definitely monitor the flower bed to see if more comes out. Thanks for letting me know.

There you go with that amazing eyesight again, floral!! I looked but did not see the purple blotches (typically very pronounced) and the fact that hemlock is not normally found in a cultivated garden (while anthriscus is) lead me to that ID. Since both are WA state noxious weeds, either/both need to come out :-)

And it's only poisonous if you eat it :-) But I'd certainly make sure I washed well before dinner!

Laurie - Hemlock isn't the same as Queen Anne's Lace. In the US I believe that name is usually used for Daucus carota. In the UK it usually refers to Anthriscus sylvestris. This shows the danger of relying on common names. Daucus carota is edible. Conium maculatum is poisonous.
