convert garage into living area

Is it ever a good idea to convert a garage into living area space? My husband and I own a 1750 sq ft ranch-style home. It sits on a concrete slab so we have no basement and therefore have limited storage space. We have 3 children and space has become a real premium. We have a 2-car garage and are thinking about converting it to living space. We live in Ann Arbor, MI where the real estate market is doing well. Should we do it?

I have seen it done.

You would gain a room but lose a garage. You have to decide which is more important to you.

Is it an option to build an addition or add a second story?

Resale should always be number one on your mind. In Michigan you receive a lot of snow and have very cold winters. Do the buyers there prefer extra living or prefer to not have to scrape snow and ice off their car? I would prefer the latter as I am in Maryland with lots of snow and cold . If you convert it, be prepared for buyers to throw a fit.
