Are those metal cabinets?

If you are going to put the dishwasher right of the sink, you will need to redo your cabinets. It does not look like enough space to put a dishwasher there since there are only drawers right of the sink. My husband and I moved into a house last year without a dishwasher and we also need and use one! It took most of the cabinet to the left of the sink to fit a standard dishwasher in and we have large cabinets (the house and cabinets were built in 1945). He was able to use the extra space for a Rev-a-shelf trash system.

Yes, since you aren't changing the cabinets, putting a dishwasher where the stove is now makes the most sense. You will probably end up rinsing all the dishes and stacking them on the counter to the right of the sink, then loading them all in the dishwasher. Adds a step to the process but still better than washing dishes by hand! If you put your extra upper cabinet over the dishwasher, it will give you a great spot to put those clean dishes and will make your kitchen look symmetrical.

Bev, do I NEED to redo the cabinets? Why would I not be able to just stick a counter top onto a dishwasher and stick in to the right of those drawers? It's still less than 2 feet from the water supplies.

You need 24" wide for a dishwasher. The dishwasher should also be adjacent to the sink as the drain and water lines will need to come from and go to your sink. You can do that with the base cabinet where it is but will probably make a drawer useless because the hoses will be in the way and will interfere.

Yes, you can put a DW where your stove currently sits. A dw is generally 24" wide & a stove 30", so you may need to create an end panel, or have a skinny cab built for the extra space. At least box in the dw to help with sound muffling. You can get a cabinet frame from Ikea (you'll need something to attach the counter to anyway).

I apologize Livinginsb. Well, they're a bit rusty and the hinges on the uppers don't attach. This is my first house, and first place I've lived with metal cabinets.
