Small vertical studs above doorways

I am thinking about leaving the small vertical studs exposed (not cover them with drywall) and stain them. These areas are in doorways and a built-in shelving.

Are there any other options and suggestions to use and beautify that area, especially the arched openings?

Sounds like a good idea, but...

The wood and OSB is not ready for stain. The studs have been toenailed and to try and prep the nails for paint will be extremely difficult. The amount of work transitioning from drywall on the walls and ceiling will be difficult, hence expensive. Gaps will need to be filled.

It's not the time to discuss options now when the framing is almost complete. To make changes in those areas now will be incredibly expensive. You can ask your project foreman, but be prepared for a "What the heck are you smoking?" look.

It wasn't so long ago: pre-AC; when hinged windows were above many of the doors to encourage airflow between rooms.

by the time they are finished off with good wood they'll just be slits. i agree its intriguing but.... talk to your project foreman about options.

I don't think you want to leave those studs exposed. They are not going to be stain quality.

I am not sure how that would look. It would be hard to clean. I would rather have between the studs shelving that I could reach. Here are many examples. http://www.houzz.com/photos/query/between-the-studs-shelving/nqrwns

I think what might be appealing to you about these studs is their openness. Indeed, they emulate transom Windows, used for light and, if operable, for air circulation above doorways. It is probably too late, but perhaps you can have the space above the square threshold area reframed to accommodate a transom window. It would not be appropriate, I think, above the arch.

Terri Henderson - the idea for shelving is probably the best option at this point. I can do that on the arched opening above a built-in shelf but I do not see how that could work on doorway.
