The pot was only $19..but,they wanted almost $9 for the saucer!..I came home and used a left over rubbermaid garbage can lid. You would never know.

Very good! I like OSH. So easy compared to going to HD or Lowes.

My local OSH recently redid its whole store with major renovations in the garden department. But the floor space devoted to nursery stock and plant variety actually went down. And there are more bedding plants and vegetables and fewer landscape plants now. They added more useless garden tchochtkes and accessories.

OSH went into bankruptcy and was purchased by Lowe's in 2013. They did a marvelous job updating the stores. A lot of marketing savvy in the works. They feel like small local hometown stores. I shop there a lot. Lowe's buys OSH

And they have lots of people around to help find things and who sometimes can help with projects. Nursery is much nicer than it used to be. Employees try to be helpful with heavy bags of mulch or whatever.

Socks..yes,I noticed that. I didn't have to look for anybody...there was always 2 and sometimes 3 people in the nursery...busy too.

The Tomatoes? I was impressed they look acclimated to the outdoors..none of that floppy greenhouse stuff. Been fine since the day they went into the ground.

They have lots of employees around to help you find things in mine too. Which is necessary since they completely upended the locations of everything. I'd been going there for quick things for more than 15 years and now I can't find anything.

I sure hope their plant inventory doesn't follow that of Lowe's (yawn). I have found some good deals at Osh. For instance a Rojo Congo philodendron for $4.

I am very fond of my local Orchard. I buy ugly duckling plants there for half off. Last I bought was a Graptopetalum Copper Roses.

Stanofh have you ever looked at Big Lots for pots? Or Dollar Tree?

We have a store here called D.D'S discounts,it's an off shoot of Ross stores.Dh and i have found quite a few large pots there for under 20.00,but it's a hit and miss sort of thing,you have to go in often to catch them.We live close to it,so no problem for us.

The OSH we had that closed down had very ordinary plants, except for Citrus and Acer palmatums. I wonder if the manager or buyer had a thing for those two types of trees. They would get first rate Citrus trees--really excellent quality, and some exotic Acers I've never seen elsewhere except specialty mail order suppliers. Then they closed. Another reopened close by, but pretty ordinary plants. Handy though, and helpful for this and that.

Ah,Kathi..my wife likes DD's. There is one here in Hayward. Never thought to look there for pots. Now,I might go with her next time.

I was at HD yesterday to buy fertilizer. No change. A huge greenhouse with just a few plants,hardly any variety and no huge oversized pots.

No Orchid baskets.

What happened was that Loews wanted to compete with Home Depot but didn't have anything competitive. Sears had bought OSH, which had always done well; but when Sears purchased OSH, Sears handed to OSH a requirement to make over and above to take care of the Sears main debt. This was too much for OSH to overcome, even though as a business it never went down hill. When Sears went into real hardship OSH was available and Loews bought it and Loews paid for the upgrades, deciding to keep the brand name since it is well respected. On top of that I have found that many of the older staff were ACE hardware people and I've always found ACE stores to be fantastic; they just often were not able to survive against Home Depot. I believe that is hte reason that you may find young people at OSH who may only know some, but they are getting great training from the older staff who are terrific. ANd over and above all Loews really has pushed the customer service. There are 5 stores in a 25 mile radius in my area and I know and shop at all of them and just really respect and enjoy the staff. It turns out that they do get solid training.

the OSH that closed in San Jose (near LAwrence I believe) was doing fine but those who were leasing the land to them wanted the land for something bigger and so they made it unattractive to re-sign the lease by making it a 25 year lease. OSH of course had no intention of signing anything that long term. So there is the one off of El Camino near the Chery Orchard shopping center near Mathilda that is the next closest to San Jose. I really like the staff there.

I love Osh. they reel me in with their saturday kid projects and I never leave without a plant, watering can, seeds, or large bag of soil. Ever.
