You could consider a simple wooden railing -- paint high gloss to modernise the feel. I love the look of the modern horizontal railings, but they worry me as they look easy for an adventurous kidlet to climb.

Consider a very plain white metal railing. Price some balcony / porch / deck railing -- they're likely less expensive than the more ornate interior railings.
