baked on goo

been looking around the various forums and this looks like the one i'm most likely to get an answer from.

i had a friend cooking on my gas stove. when he got done, he didn't wipe up the overspill and now it is totally BAKED ON. i've tried soaking it, baking soda, different cleaners, an sos pad and nothing is taking it off. it's SO ugly on my new stove top!

is there something i can use to get it up? thanks!

What kind of goo is it? Grease, tomato sauce splatters, what?

Is it burned in or just dry?

What surface is it on - coated steel, stainless steel or glass?

I often loosen dried gunk on the stove by putting wet rag over it for awhile - even overnight. Normally it wipes right off. I suspect you have something worse going on but it's hard to know without more info.

to be honest, i'm not sure what it is! i had 20 people here for a weekend and everybody was using the stove for various things so i am pretty clueless. i will try the wet rag and see if that helps. thanks!
