Does this item have holes in the back for cords to run through?

Yes, it has two holes on it but not shown on pictures.

Great, where do those holes lead - which compartments? also how large the compartments?

The holes are on the back side of the open shelves. Dimensions of the shelves are 7'' H x 29.5'' W x 17'' D
