I think if it were me, I would block off that tiny arched window and hang art over it. It creates a glare in the room and greatly limits your ability to create a focal point of interest in the room. A large piece of art would have impact on that wall, and enable you to give the room real character.

I think orange, red, and gold, like in the inspiration pic, would be great. I also think some large modern paintings with large white frames, also found in the above pic, would soften that back wall. Let's see if a color expert can contribute to this discussion.

Katie, I think you're right. I like those oranges, reds, and golds. Also gives me the idea of a shelf on the back wall behind the sofa. I agree some white framed art or black and white travel photos would do well on the back wall. Ties in the white from the fauxdenza too.

The rug doesn't look too small to me.

What if you moved the floating sideboard to the accent wall and hung a large gorgeous piece of art over it. Then to the right of that a tall plant with large leaves in the corner with the window. The right hand wall could have the couch facing the large window (is the view nice? It would be a focal point for those seated), and the two black leather chairs could face the couch with their backs to the large window...so youre basically turning your seating arrangement 90 degrees.

The couch seems small for the scale of the other furniture but maybe that's an optical illusion.

The art piece could be your springboard for a color you could add to your space for warmth and interest.

Instead of getting rid of your arc lamp how about putting on a new drum shade? It would create a cozier effect.

You have a lot of leather, metal, and glass...and gray. Those things read "cold". What reads warm? Task lighting; reds/yellows/oranges; fabrics, pillows, yarns, and furs; wood and pottery. Perhaps adding some touches of these warm elements in your space would soften the feel.

Found a piece of art just for fun. Threw it on the wall and pulled the warm yellow out to accessorize with a pillow. Just doing that seems to have warmed up and softened the space considerably. Also I put a lamp in the corner if you want to do away with the arc lamp.

That dark wall is really throwing me off. It. It makes the room look so small! And with all those angles, well, I just don't think it was a good choice. Paint it the same color as the other walls. Also a photo during the day, with the blind open, would give us a better feel for the room. It doesn't Even look like the same place as the previous owners!

The window treatments were what I noticed first, not keen on valances or blind, maybe something like in one of these pics would look better

I think copper looks amazing with that colour. Even a big brass framed mirror. Though not sure as you have silver on the chairs, could get away with it if you changed the table

What about a large piece of Art on accent wall ?...An Art can really bring in a wave of deftness to your room. It acts as a style to your room.

I think the arc lamp is better suited in the dark corner that has no window. I would at least get some art on the walls and change out the cellular shade over the window.

Current blinds create a blockhage. Firm beliver window treatments need to be practical, but honor the architecture.

Dennis and blenheimnewzealand... Do you have suggestions on how to do the window treatments? I think I am in agreement that the shades need to go and should probably be drapes or something, but I just don't know what kind would work well given the odd architectural setup on that window.

Thanks tphilly. For those interested, the fauxdenza is made from Ikea besta cabinets (a set of 2 cabinets and a single cabinet, to make 3) w/ the glossy white doors. I made the top from Red Oak plywood and veneered the edges w/ edge banding. Stained w/ a Jacobeen stain from minwax and poly'd w/ semi-gloss. Mounted to the cabinets from the inside w/ screws and fender washes on both the sides and top.

The two chairs with the matching ottomans are a bit much so close together. Try separating and remove ottoman of chair near credenza. Your access into the room will now be dead center. Remove valance on right window. Open the blinds...lets see what it looks like open. Lamp moved to left side. I would replace end tables/ or coffee table with something wood. You need something organic and warm and natural to offset the leather, chrome, and glass. A big peace lily or indoor tree would look lovely by the right window. And of course, art for above sofa.

Thanks Booby. Here is an image of how I planned it... once I put the furniture in the room it didn't seem to work. I think the bench/coffee table was too narrow to the eye in real life and we were trying to make it all work with that so settled on the current layout. Only the other day we finally took that table out and replaced with circle one from another room. Now I think the planned layout may work better and to your point, open up the room.

I think your arch window would look more modern if you could remove the pane slats. Are those just decorative and removable?

I'm a big fan of the dark wall. You could add impact with an artwork with subtle color and keep it vertically oriented to keep the height of the room. I did a quick mockup.

I would suggest a gallery wall with a collection of art since a large piece may go beyond making a statement and overtake the room while making the furniture seem small by comparison.

Individual window shades--romans or woven wood or even cellular, if you like--and a tripod lamp.

Valerie, that is a great idea about the arch window panes... I will take a look and see if they are decorative; I think they may be, in which case I agree they would make it look more modern.

So hard to drape the half circle window. If you can remove the mullions it would be more modern. Add a small side table on each side of the sofa, wonderful abstract art (only you can choose your art). Check out Great Big Canvas or Art.com. Add a tree (live) to the left side of the room. I love your furniture & your MCM style.

Go to Ikea & buy some curtain wire to install along the peaked wall above the half circle window & add clips to filmy fabric, trim fabric to be horizontal. Check out LILL shears for $4.99 a pair. This fabric does not need to be hemmed (just cut) & make it very full.

Sandra, I just took a look at lill and I don't mind the look... trying to visualize what you mean about above the half circle window though... can't envision it. I like the idea of a table on each side of the couch... I am going to move some furniture around tonight and see if something makes more sense. Did you look at the model I designed? Do you think that layout looks like it would work better (replace the long metal table wth the white circle one we have now).

I rearranged and I am already like 10x happier with it. I think we need a bigger circle coffee table so we can space out the chairs and ottomans slightly more, but I'm much happier. Still need to figure out art and fabrics, but I'm not feeling so hopeless. That wall color might even work after all!

Also, managed to remove the panes from the window. Who would have known it was that easy! So much cleaner.

Now get some wood and a plant! The shade is needed for privacy but looks great when open. You are on the right track.

Remove the round side table. Don't have two round tables so close to each other. Add a square or rectangle next to the sofa.

There's a Russian painter on etsy.com who does great work. Would any of these work on your dark wall?

I will take that advice on the multiple round tables. Do you think a round or square coffee table is better in my new layout? Could go square for coffee and keep round end table.

You're right, the round coffee table looks a bit lost and too far away from sofa or chairs to be useful . A large square table would be the best option with the new arrangement. Be sure to have front legs of the chairs and ottomans the same distance from the sides of the sofa.

With the windows cleared, and a rearranging, things are looking great. Here's my 2 cents. Simplify the space a little by painting all the walls and the ceilings the same color. I like the dark color. My choice for your room would be navy blue. Others here will give you better advice on the color. Keep tweaking and you'll have a fantastic room!

I would look for a live edge wood coffee table...

New arrangement, shade gone=major step in the right direction! I would get rid of the arc lamp, get a beautiful statement pic for blue wall, and soften the room with table lamps and a highlight/ spotlight illuminating the focal art on the blue wall ( with a dimmer!).
Window treatment- i like the idea of natural woven blinds suggested by another houzzer. Soft but contemporary.

Love the blue accent wall, the room and the furniture, and am thrilled the monolithic shade has gone.

I would prefer 3 separate blinds on the window, as in the photos posted by blenheimnewzealand and groveraxle. I wouldn't cover the arch and would use either textured / woven blinds or fabric blinds with a plain background and bold contemporary geometric pattern in the blue of the accent wall.

Your most important investment will probably be the artwork; you should therefore try find a shop / gallery that is willing to bring the artworks to test on the wall prior to making a final decision. The colours and size will be quite important.

I have a similar accent wall and although I use it as background to a flat screen TV (almost makes the TV disappear), I've realised that it's a fabulous foil to classic gilt, copper or brass (makes them truly pop! - also mentioned by blenheimnewzealand earlier) as well as to bright trendy colours (e.g. if you wanted orange or magenta in the painting or scatter cushions). There are loads of examples of similar blue accent walls in Houzz Ideabooks from which to get inspiration. I also wouldn't worry too much about mixing metals (gold and silver hues), as there appears to be a trend in this direction. (There's an Ideabook on this too somewhere on Houzz :) )

The Arc lamp was probably fairly expensive, but sadly i tend to agree with those who commented that it's not working here. As suggested by puremichigan60, try moving it so that it's not seen against the blue wall.

Hi, wanted to share an update after we painted the trim (we've only done this room so far). We still need to do window treatments and we'll definitely need some lamps and artwork. Not sure what else it needs. I think it needs something on the far left side to the left of the sofa.

Plants!! Succulents or a fiddle leaf fig.

I would DEFINITELY take the shade down off of the window. The shade is making the room look darker... I would take it down for more natural light in the living room.

There is no shade anymore. I posted some new pictures after painting trim and Windows and removing the window treatments.

I think you need some paintings and drawing work to make it appealing.

This is looking great! I usually don't like accent walls, but I LOVE yours. Nice color choice. I like a lot of the art and accent color suggestions offered. I'll add one thought...if you want to move the sofa a little bit away from the window, you could put a sofa table behind it and add a plant, lamp, or other decor objects on it. If you want to add bamboo blinds (like the pics posted by others) and also want to add drapes, moving the sofa forward a bit would give you more space for drapes.

Thanks for the advice on moving the sofa out. I was thinking the same thing upon looking at the picture. It looks different in the picture than in person, but I still think I will try to move it out, it just may make the rest of the furniture more crowded. Will let you all know.
