pruning for flowering

Hello everyone,I'm new to this forum and would like to ask some really basic questions.I've just bought a very young Prunus Persica(Melred)and intend to get a Mume later, they'll be containerised. These are my first flowering trees and have never pruned for flowers before(I'm not really interested in pruning to enhance fruiting)
What wood bears the flowers? Am I right in assuming that the new growth that appears this year will flower next year? Will any flowers appear on older wood,if so for how long, or is it only on the previous summer's growth IE branches off the older wood?In other words,how/when do I prune for best show of flowers.
Also is there any reason these plants cannot be grown on their own roots ignoring commercial and fruiting requirements?
My little 3ft Persica has started sprouting growth at the top but there are 2 branches lower down which are bare with no visible buds, will these branches do anything?
Sorry they may seem silly questions but this side of trees is new to me.Any help greatly appreciated, thankyou for your time.
