Picea glauca 'Pendula' [prostrate]

Does Picea glauca 'Pendula' need staked for height or does it develop a leader on it's own?

I have other plants of this variety that develop their own tops.

However, I found this at a nursery and love the way it is currently growing. I decided that if it does try to develop a leader I will be clipping it.

They may be popular and un-rare, but I still love them. Here is my original that does grow "normal". Also have a third smaller one. That's probably enough for now, gotta save room for other plants. Pretty soon I will have my lawn converted into grass strips/paths.

I have been taking pictures of the gardens/plants all spring. One of these days I'll try to get some posted.

I would like to do more rock work, but they are somewhat expensive around here. Hard to buy a boulder when you can buy a nice conifer for less!

I'm a bit confused. Is that your garden or a nursery?

That is unusual for P. glauca 'Pendula'. My understanding is they generally don't need to be staked, which is why I find it so appealing. It looks great sprawling over the rocks.

It was late on a Friday night; nothing was clear.

P. g. 'Pendula' has become a very common plant, which I suppose was inevitable. They grow surprisingly fast and are easy where I live. Why yours wants to sprawl across the rocks is peculiar, but it looks great in its own right. It appears you've got plenty of space to plant another one. :)

Picea glauca 'pendula' usually grows nice and straight up, then of course weeps down with the side branching as we all know....Its usually Pice pungens that we see sprawling and occasionally throwing up single or multiple leaders like procumbens or prostrata.

Whatever you got growing there, it looks great. Would love to see some more photos. Your work with the rocks looks killer...nice job!

Beautiful.! I think the same way.Every year I say this is the year I am going to invest in rocks and not buy conifers. Hasn't happened yet. Total lack if willpower.
