Natural pond on our property - not spring fed

It is very gunky and full of algae and I need to know what I can do. It is very deep and our Lab loves to swim in it daily but it is sooooo yucky looking. He doesn't smell at all when he comes out though so I don't think the water is dirty - just looks like baby diarrhea. I would like to get rid of the algae just to make it look more appealing. Will plants help? What kind? I am in Tennessee, Z7. BTW, it isn't very large -

Algae is the result of nutrients in the water and sunlight. Remove either of those and the algae disappears. Some plants can shade the water and/or remove nutrients. You can also look at how the nutrients are getting into the pond, ie. surface water run off , falling leaves, etc. Your dog might also be part of the problem, bringing in nutrients and stirring up sediments on the bottom of the pond.
