Personally I would at a small area rug to start and perhaps and light and airy sitting area due to the gorgeous lighting in that room.

Fran, I'd start with a nice rug,5 by 7?, then place a console table on the wall with a lamp and then a bowl for keys or mail and a round contemporary mirror over it. Ballard designs has nice choices. Then see how you feel about a chair and small table or 2 chairs.

A nice accent plant, high quality would dress it up, a topiary, a small olive tree or birch would look nice too.

Possibilities: Some nice plants, a nice rug, a round table in the centre with fresh flowers on it...

I personally would treat it like an indoor sunroom. Add lots of green, living plants, a water-feature, a comfy bench for guests or the neighbour kids to wait, a large full-size, wall mirror to bounce the light around, a comfy chair to read a book/have a coffee/catch your breath, a small table with one or two decorative items, and that's about it.

First off, before anyone wastes anymore of their time...define your meaning of "functional and inviting?"

You have nixed the idea of a mudroom, but you want "flow." Are you sure of what you want or need for the space or are you looking for a step-by-step how-to guide? Or are you just looking for ideas?

Being clear with your terms will help a lot and again, prevent wasting everyone's time, including yours.

I agree with the last post. For an accurate read of the room you really need to post a picture of the other part/side of the room rather than listing out the living room furnishings.

Isn't it nice to have so much space that you don't know what to do with it!!! Love that little room.

It will be an awesome place for a big Christmas tree - right there in the corner of the windows.

I like the idea of the console table and lamp and mirror, on the side wall, but that still leaves a lot of room, doesn't it. I like the idea of 2 chairs in the corner with a table and lamp in between. It would be a nice morning spot to sit and read and have quiet time

Thank you. I just moved in, so the other rooms are also a work in progress and I do not have photos of the furnished rooms in their final state since I'm working on them too. I appreciate the suggestions as to ideas for the space. The home doesn't have a dining room, so I had considered a small table, but the location is awkward. Just trying to make the entry have an inviting feel but also serve a purpose if possible to maximize the space.

I had first thought of using the space as a breakfast area, so it is interesting that you mention that there is no dining room.

You could create a small entry area and then use some sort of barrier to create an eating area. Use screening or a sliding wall of some sort. One wall could have a sofa with eating table or bench with table or a built-in banquette with storage underneath.

Here's a bunch more ideas.

Bring nature in. you can have lots of plants with that beautiful light and that is very calming. Does your family have an artistic interest? I have a small irregular "art room" upstairs and it reminds me what I'm about. If your family likes music, then perhaps a piano. Or books. One can never have too many books.

All rooms need a purpose. Unless there's a reason to use this room, such as art or music or as a library, people will just sail in to the living room and it will be wasted space.

I totally agree about the Christmas tree.

I think it's wonderful to have a space to meet and greet visitors that lets them in without admitting them to your whole home. A few charming pieces of furniture should be perfect for the room.

I love the idea of a small table and two chairs, more like a bistro area, morning coffee, a drink with a friend. It looks like it may be big enough for a corner banquette and a chair or two.
