Modernize my kitchen

In my apartment I have a kitchen, please see attached.

What would you change to modernize it as I am bored of the colours that were in fashion 15 years ago, see photo. At the moment we don't have an island or bench to eat near the kitchen, please some ideas. The only thing I like is that the top cabinets go all the way up to the ceiling which looks neat as well as provides more storage space.

First thing would be to address refrigerator, I would wrap with cabinet so it softens the utility look from your family room and get a little extra storage above. Being a small space the range with a nice marching microwave with vent built in would be space saving feature and can look nice. I would keep cabinets light in color (painted instead of stained) and find a nice stone top to make a statement with. If you like the stone column in hall pull some colors from it when choosing counters. No stone backsplash, bring tile splash down to counter. I would let counter material run up to bottom of window behind sink (outside of trim to outside of trim). Tile would be to broken and insignificant look in that space.

I love the look of your cabinets - are they in good shape? At a minimum, new counters and backsplash would update in nicely.

I think you should paint the cabinetry...they already have a modern look with the double upper cabinets and lines...and go with a color scheme you are drawn to, and that will blend or at least be somewhat neutral up against your living room and entry decor.

don't you need professionals to paint cabinets? don't want to screw it up. :-)

I'd recommend keeping the wood cabinets as they are. Replace the backsplash with back painted glass. Replace counters with with white Quartz. Remove as much from the counters as possible.

It's hard for me to tell how much space you have from the bump out to the edge of the fridge. If there's enough space, you can add a peninsula from the bump out with a waterfall edge in the Quartz. Then an overhang on the living room side for a stool or 2. It might be too tight a space though. You may be able to squeeze in a small counter.

Don't paint the cabinets. New backsplash and some colorful things on the counter should do it.

Agree with light counter and different backsplash. I'm actually renovating in the direction of your current cabinets, so I have an ideabook full of... ideas.

don't paint those cabinets, they're beautiful. I'd move the refrigerator. it's in the middle of the place and doesn't look nice. can you take that wall down and move things around? if that's not in your budget go with one of acm's photos. they're all nice.

White counter and backsplash would look great with the current cabinets, which I wouldn't change.
