Laminate through builder?

We are building a house and the floor plan is open concept the hallway, dining room, kitchen, breakfast nook and great room are all connected and open to each other. Our builders standard flooring is level 1 laminate Armstrong premier classics in the hallway, nook, and kitchen and builder grade carpet in the dining room and great room. We are for sure going to pay for laminate in the dining room because I don't want food falling on the carpet. However, I'm hung up in the great room. Yes it is open to the other rooms but the builder is charging $5.40 per square foot for laminate, making the price over $2,000 for just one room. This is such a ridiculous price that I'm tempted to get carpet. But then I worry that when I want to match later I'll have a harder time matching. Will I always be stuck with carpet? Would it look silly for that to be the only room with carpet?

Is that the price of the laminate installed or just for the laminate? If it's not installed price I think you could do better with a LVT.

It is installed, $2160 installed for 402 square feet that price includes the credit for foregoing carpet and pad.

If you prefer to have laminate, do it now even with the inflated price! We had the exact same dilemma and at first chose to save $1200 and do carpet in the family room but after two days I had major, major regret and paid the upgrade price to continue the laminate throughout so our entire main floor had laminate and no carpet. The only difference is that the laminate we chose is not entry level laminate, it's very high quality 12mm water-resistant laminate.

As to whether or not it would look weird to have carpet in just the great room the answer is no, it would look just fine. One thing to consider with continuing the laminate is how long of a span you can do without requiring a transition strip. Our great room concept house is about 40'x50'+ and many laminate floors can only go up to 33' in either direction before needing a strip but the floor we had installed can go over 60' without a transition. Had we needed a transition I would have just gone with carpet.

Oh no! Do not us Armstrong!

We did our whole house in Armstrong and it looks terrible. We used cherry, top of the line, and where the boards fit together there are wavy places. If you get a drop of water where the boards come together it will bubble. I felt like we received a bad batch of wood, but Armstrong looks at it and would not do anything. My daughter has Pergp brand, the cheaper one, and she can do anything on her floors and they looked great. She has had them for about 13 years and has had parties with an ice chest on the floor and the water dos not hurt the Pergo floors.
