Fertilizer Striping Help

last modified: 10 years ago

(I'll preface this by saying I
have seen many posts on here on this topic that have helped me mostly eliminate
the problem over the last 3 seasons. I somehow still ended up with it after my
latest application which has me reaching out directly for help)

My recent application of a weed
and feed type fertilizer has resulted in stripes in the lawn. I am using a
broadcast spreader - specifically the Scott's LawnPRO/edge guard model that is
black with rubber tires. I have been seeing this issue to varying degrees over
the years and had thought I eliminated it by being more careful about my
distance between passes. I have roughly 1 acre of grass, and in this occurrence
I only ended up with striping in the center of my backyard (~25% of the overall
lawn). I put the fertilizer down exactly 1 week ago, after a day of heavy rain.
I have an irrigation system that was used 3 times between today and last
Monday (1 week).

My theory is that my edgeguard
was somehow activated prior to starting my backyard. (Though it is currently
not activated so would have to have moved back out of the way during cleaning
of the spreader).

In the attached photo, you will
see green reflectors in the background. These reflectors represent the center
of my north-bound fertilizer pass. I made an additional south-bound fertilizer
pass in between each reflector. The result was a light green stripe directly to
the right of each north-bound pass. The spacing is roughly 5-6 ft (10-12 in
between green reflectors).

Long story short, I'm hoping
others can see this picture and confirm that those areas likely saw far LESS
fertilizer than the rest of the lawn (as opposed to them being somehow OVER
fertilized). And if so - If anyone can recommend a product for me put down only
in those areas in hopes of the stripes blending in better with the rest of the
lawn (perhaps a Nitrogen green up but I am no expert).
