Where did you buy it from? It is rare to have bare wood as a "finished" table top. Very, very rare. I would check to see what was used to "finish" it, and then find a compatible material. If this has a finish on it, you may not be able to add anything more without doing more harm than good.

Ask the people/person who sold it to you. Ask them if it is "finished". You may have a matte finish on there without knowing it. A wax may damage it quite fast.

In the end, if you are concerned with stains, the best option is always a glass top.

Thank you for your response. I bought it from Rachel Ashwell Shabby Chic. They said it's "lightly waxed". I bought a wax and tested it. Something came off on the rag. I'm guessing it's the whitewash they used. I'm worried that if I wax it and it removes the whitewash, I won't be able to refinish I b/c the wax will deeply penetrate the wood and not let the new whitewash stick. Any thoughts?

Waxing should not remove the whitewash. Wax is a poor finish for a heavy use table, but it's what you have.
