For a modern, simple look, how about 5 items of the same color? Low enough to not hide the windows at all. I am thinking something like this action of the repeating birds on the piano. It doesn't have to be birds, but something you love.

Three double gourd black matte ceramic vases in the window. Don't like the color glass look.

Great ideas so far! I agree items should match whether objects or stained/leaded glass. Consider installing three LED's above to illuminate whatever you choose to display.

Maybe add a row of candles or LED candles at varying heights. It would illuminate the space and look really pretty at night.

Is this the only source of natural light in the room? Honestly, if it's not, I'd put up a curtain, or decorative screen, close to the edge, and block the windows. Anything you put up is going to look too small, and if you put up a lot of stuff, too cluttered.

I think the problem with the space is the niche for the tv. TVs are much smaller and flatter and can be wall mounted now. It doesn't need a big box to hide the rear. If you are staying in the home for a while, you may want to reconfigure the space. Drywall the niche, center the fireplace and move the tv to the wall across from the sofa.

What about something like this fireplace mantle - keeping it symmetrical with varying objects going across the ledge?

I suggest a beautiful low basket to add texture, color and a natural element to add to the view of the trees. If you can find one in an antique store that has patina

Glass vases are a good idea, but they don't seem to flow well with the rest of your darker decor. I would do one plant placed in the center (to take advantage of the natural light) in a pot that has distinct shape or maybe even clear glass. Then, add 1 item on either side of plant like a framed photo/artwork and a small sculpture piece.

Would you put the rectangular vessels all the way across the ledge, or just in the center and then add the funky votive candles on either side?

I would paint the "mantel" a stronger color such as a medium brown or ebony to balance the dark brick and TV. Also, remove the speakers from the stands and just set them on the tv stand, they are very distracting.

And paint the back wall of the alcove with a darker shade of the main wall paint. I still prefer putting items in the alcove which take advantage of the backlight coming from the windows.

You have taken exactly the right approach. Resist the suggestions to add clutter!! If I made any change here, it would be because I found one simple lower thing, like a beautiful piece of driftwood, to lay across the space all by itself.

I like the succulent idea. Three of these centered between each window and nothing more. You could use real ones though.

Yes, three planter with real succulent plants in a row is another great option. However, for those who have a busy schedule or are not blessed with a green thumb, faux plants may work best.

I'm not sure that anything is needed there. Or maybe one plant off to the side. Is there any art on the wall to the left of the tv? Can we get a picture of that whole wall?
