I'm taking down a support wall to put in an island and open up the space. In order to have proper support I would need to put in 1 post (corner of island) or a 5 inch bulck head running the entire length. If I go with a colum the supporting beam would be put flush into the ceiling. Which of the two options would provide a more open space?

Pay extra for steel with no column or soffit. Your structural engineer can specify it correctly.

yes i agree with what sophie says but sometimes its $$$$$ instead of $$$.

i'd choose a beam running the length of the space over a post.

I would choose the beam even if not put into the ceiling over a post

engineer is using a steel beam but because it's a 23' span he recommended either 8" beam with post or a 12" beam with a bulk head but no post to avoid any deflection or vibration issues. does this sound correct? or is there another option given the space?
