Filling Spots Between Sod Pieces

I laid new sod a few weeks ago and it is taking in well. To save some money I laid the sod in a checkered board pattern so that the Bermuda grass will fill in the empty spots in time. I know that I need to fill in the spaces between the sod so that I get a relatively even yard but I don't know if this filler needs to be leveling sand or a lawn soil. Both options make sense in my head since the leveling sand wouldn't wash away with any sand but the lawn soil would have the fertilizer that the grass would need and hopefully fill in faster. or is there a 3rd option?
