The best dog-friendly rugs I have ever found are from Flor. You have to check that out. Flor.com. It is approximately 20 inch carpet squares that come apart for cleaning and damage replacement. I love them. Pick a darker color so they won't show dirt, and pick a durable style. They are very helpful when you call them for advice. Some styles are better suited for pets.

I don't really think your mid-century modern furniture looks bad in your current home. The only part that seems out of place is your dining set. Something industrial or modern would suit the area well. The biggest change I would make with your dining set is color. The current color doesn't seem to work. I could see a darker color working better.

Absolutely LOVE your space! Quirky, fun, and very well put together. I agree with the previous comment that the only thing that looks a tad out of place is the color of the dining room table. You might try painting and distressing it if you're up to a project before buying a new one. As for rugs, I find that low pile ones work best with dogs; in between vacuuming, I sweep mine and come up with an astonishing amount of hair.

I think your furniture looks fine. The only thing a little jarring to me is the art on the brick wall flanking the living room window. Maybe it's the lights or just the way it all translates in the photo...? For some reason the colors against that brick doesn't work for me. Otherwise I think your place looks great!

I like your look! Agree that a rug would be a good addition. Also, the mirror hung across from the sofa doesn't seem to fit with the rest of the decor style. That's okay if you want to mix things up a bit. You could consider painting it a brighter color to make it stand out more and to balance the distribution of color in the room.

Ok, took the rug advice. The dining room rug I bought, largest I could find, and kept it navy blue as one Houzzer suggested. However, although the living room rug looked fine at my previous home, it looks awkward here. Am I right? Please keep helping me fine tuning this space. BTW, some of the decor was changed for July 4th.

although i personally am not a fan of rugs in the dining room if you are going to keep one, why not use the green? it would go over there better? you have a couple green elements.

oh gosh, i know i did not comment on the earlier art, seemed like a bunch of christmas lights to me, but to each there own. but i must say, it is definitely preferable to the star, which is too small? lacks presence would be right.

If I were to hazard a guess, I'd first go with the problem of having way too many clashing undertones. Solving this would be difficult at best in a rental. Your best bet would be to include some rugs to calm some of the undertones to make your favorite take up the most space. The green rug looks very green next to the brick because they're complementary colors so throwing a neutral in there may give the eye some rest.

Then I would think about the areas with too much visual noise. For example, I don't think there should be any art on the brick at all. The brick has a very strong contrasting finish in white and maroon - it just doesn't want or need more visual information.

I would also suggest different lighting. Currently, it looks harsh.

My thought is that with the brick walls and other things, it really makes the vibe of your place more rustic and industrial and appears to make your existing pieces too insubstantial in comparison. I would go with a large heavier coffee table - more rustic for the living room and change out the mirror for something like black and white photos, perhaps in chrome frames. For the dining room I would go with a rug with some texture, perhaps a natural fiber rug, perhaps something like this example:

The brick and the railings are just asking for an industrial decor. The first photo with the bright graphics and the torcheres in the corner says it all. In a word, NO. MCM needs a calm neutral background to highlight the furnishings and if you can't change the space I'd start with some subdued decorative lighting and start channeling your inner steampunk.

As another poster said, the dining set color is OFF.

I think you can add area rugs to define the spaces and add a unifying color. Modern furniture like yours can look good in this style home. Keep your art at eye level. Move things around...a lot of it is lightweight enough to try it in several places before making decisions. Mix some heavier furniture with the lightweight furniture. Add storage if needed. Consider similar window treatments for all connected spaces. Have fun and let your personality show.

I️ think that adding more industrial modern furniture will improve the appeal. By adding an industrial style dining table, you would reduce the clash and compliment the metal stairs and railing(a black table would look nice). If there was any oddness of the room it would be because of the tile floors. Unfortunately renovating the floors is not an option, considering it is a rental property. I️ hope you find this helpful.
