Tree stump for flower pot

I have this tree stump I'm wanting to plant something like tiny rubies Dian thus or maybe some creeping blue phlox. My questions are should I treat the stump with some kind of weather preserver? Also I'm not sure if I should leave it standing up and dig out the two splits or lay it down and dig out two or three areas for flowers. Or should I just not mess with it? Any suggestion appreciated
I seen this one but it is using hanging baskets
