I like the fence in the third photo the best! It is visually more interesting since the fence posts are not all the same height, giving it a wavy design.

I used the same black railing for my pool enclosure. Our pool looks out over a lake so it was important to us to have the fencing disappear as much as possible. From your pictures though it appears you like it better when the fencing is an integral part of the landscaping around your pool area rather than one that disappears so the view is better. So I think you will like the one you have chosen just fine.

consider how it will feel sitting within the enclosure tho, not only how it appears from a distance. you might not want 'hot box' feeling.

Good choice (what you were going to do) -- it will look great.

If you have young children, I would make sure that the fence is taller-5 feet tall is safest. We went with a five foot wrought iron look fence and were very happy with it.

I like the looks of the iron fence. Also it's less maintenance than the wooded fence would be. Good luck beautiful pool area!

We have steel and glass around ours IMO the fence should be as invisible as possible and FYI none of those options are high enough to make code at least where I live

I like the look of both wooden fences, but poshky has a good point about maintenance. I also think the fences should be higher than the pictures seem. if you are considering other options, I personally don't like glass, as it gives me the 'box' feeling, unless massive, and allows little air circulation.

An iron fence would look great and there's no maintenance. All you need are colorful flowers and a few flowering trees :)

I am not sure of your location, but sometimes there are animals such as bears, deers, and other animals that could get over a 4 foot fence, I would make it higher. Nice pool!

We did black chain link, iron was over our budget at the time. It too disappears. Our fence guy suggested that if we got a wooden fence we might feel too closed in.

I vote wrought iron. The pool and plantings should be the stars, not the fence.

In our area the code states it has to be no less than five feet and can be made of something you can climb. Such as chain link or wood with exposed rails. Patricia Cowell's fence would be ideal. ladmers wouldn't pass code.

by the way none are wrought iron, all aluminum now.

RI code says the pool fence has to be 48" tall (just found this online) but ours is 54" (those photos up near the top).

Hose down the aluminium if you have a salt water pool. Put in a childproof gate and make the fence unclimbable by kids.

I would go for the tallest black vertical wrought iron fence allowed. 6' if you can get it. You won't have to worry about maintenance, it's classic, looks great, you won't bust it with an errant rock from your ride-on or weed whacker, it's hard to get over a 6' fence and your liability will be further reduced.

I agree, no chain link! Too easy for kids and drunk neighbours/guests/intruders to climb...

I love the wood fence, but I think what makes it extra special is that the the fence is set back, so there is room for plantings on the interior, as well as exterior. Although I love the wood fence, I would probably look for a scalloped metal, or dark PVC scalloped fence, and make sure the interior, as well as the exterior of the fence is landscaped. That way, going into the pool area will feel like a little retreat of it's own.

Hi Mike, if you want to go with an enclosed look for your pool, we think either of your options could work. It depends on your preference between wood and iron (the unmatched look of real wood vs the low maintenance of iron). We love the way the wooded fence in your example leaves room for landscaping in and around the pool area! However, depending on where you live you might have different height and material regulations on your pool fence which will definitely affect your decision.

If you want to open up the space of your pool, another idea you could consider is glass pool fencing. Glass pool fencing is both safe and stylish - it allows a clear view of the beautiful greenery you have in your backyard while keeping your pool up to code.

This wood and wire fencing is attractive and allows visibility. As others have said, make sure you follow your local safety codes.
