Dining Room Dilema

What can I do to update my dining room without getting rid of the formal DR set? I like the art work on my wall, not sure about the lamps. Need ideas for the table centerpiece??? Please help! :)

I'm not sure about the lamps either.

They seem kind of big for the space.

It's an elegant room, but to me, it looks rather drab. I would remove the lamps, as they cover up the artwork, lower the two smaller pictures and add sconces above. ( Perhaps move the large candle sconce, if you have another, where the smaller pictures are and put the pictures somewhere else in the room, perhaps hanging them together one above the other.) I would put a bold colorful fabric on the chair seats to liven up the space a bit. I'd consider small chandelier shades in a color that matches the seats or picks up a color in the seats if you choose a pattern. Also, it needs something "organic" in the room to soften it a bit. Flower arrangement as a center piece? Plant on the buffet? Your choices of container and style of plant can help update the room. Have fun and best wishes!

I'd say the lamps are very much in the way. I also think they add too the overly symmetrical feel. Maybe remove the lamps and post another picture.

I would definitely remove the lamps. It's a small room, so I would take out the extra chairs next to the buffet. You could paint your chairs with chalk paint to update them. I think two tall potted trees on either side of buffet would balance your large painting.

Remove the lamps. Have your dining set professionally painted white and add a large white ceiling medallion.

Is that wall to wall carpet? Is there wood underneath? Removing that would make a huge difference.

Get rid of the lamps and the small bird artwork. Make the large piece of artwork the focus and choose a color palette from that piece. Change the ceiling light to a really great one and put that light in a dimmer. Makes a HUGE difference. I love Betsy's idea of changing the chair color. Also, change the fabric on the seats. This is inexpensive to have done or a DIY if you have patience and a staple gun. Good luck

Also, ditch the candle sconce and hang the light lower. You have beautiful mouldings. Maybe emphasize these.

Take the drabness out by painting the wainscot white like the baseboards and door trim. I suspect that goes throughout the house. Here's a pretty palette of fabrics from Arkfabrics.com that would work well to establish a bit of a coastal feeling with your QA dining set.Small herringbone for chair seats and large seashell floral for drapes. I would use the large art above a sofa somewhere. It is too wide to hang above the buffet. The two beach birds are perfect for going coastal. Hang them side by side with their bottom frame about where the bottom of the large picture is and with one frame's width between them. Add a single lamp small or a trio of candlesticks to the buffet and decorate the table top with some coral. Coastal style sconces might be used flanking the window but depends on what you find for your budget

Adding complimentary contrasting colors always helps any room! Having all the same colors and/or all dark, or light colors does not help any room because everything is the same. Just like in painting a canvas or creating a quilt, you need those color contrasts to add interest!

I guess I'm the only one who likes the lamps and how the colors in both the base and shades play off the colors in all your art! May I suggest you raise the bird paintings and place the lamps on stands under the birds. Play with overlap here.

I really am distracted by the chair back style and I don't like them against your art/focal wall. I think covering the chairs with cream or sand colored covers would be enhancing.

    Thoughts?

Thank you so much for all of your ideas! I did remove the lamps! I will send an updated picture as I continue moving things around. And yes I have wall to wall carpet for now. No hardwoods underneath. Keep the ideas coming! Thanks again!! :)

I agree that your lamps are beautiful even if not "right" on the buffet. The idea of putting them on plant stands somewhere else in the room seems like a very good one.

This is a view into the dining room from the foyer. I removed the lamps and changed out the artwork above the credenza. I also have other pieces that could work beside the larger painting. I'm still moving pieces around! Any other ideas? I will look for fabric to change out the chair seats. I'm not necessarily going for a coastal look, I just liked those pictures! But I can move them as well!

Keep showing us more of your great spaces and stuff!

Try this: Move the large mirror in your foyer and hang it horizontally over your dining room console. Those two mirrored framed rectangles? What is in the center of them? Hang them over the mirrored chest in the foyer.

If you are not married to the birds, remove them from the dining room.

Let's see what those changes look like and then go from there!

    Thank you!

I think the mirror in the foyer would look really nice over the buffet. Upholstered chairs for the head of the table would change the look. But honestly it looks beautiful as is to me.
