Dining Room First Glance

Hoping to get some ideas from this forum about an empty space. It is a combined living dining room. I have fallen by the wayside side and now have to make decisions in multiple areas of my home. I have been here for 21 years and it is showing a lackluster breadth in design.

The chandelier is now in my kitchen and will be hung in this room, i need a dining room set, and well, just a lot of redo.

Saw this on Sacramento Craigslist and I like the chairs, the table is something I feel is terribly wrong for this space, give me ANY comments,

Beth

Yes, it the chairs, thanks, found this table but for the price probably not great quality. The pic of my chandelier came out dark, this one is older, but I see it was crooked, right after we finished the kitchen

I am a glass table lover so like the glass one but not fond of the chairs...IMO you could put your little plaid chairs at each end and some more delicate unpadded chairs on the side. Take down valance, please.....hang sheers on each window.

Oh lord, yes the fabric was hung just decor for a shower. Yes they and shades, flooring, and all other items can go. I can sew anything, panels will come into play after I get the main area including the living room part.

If you like the chairs a lot, it's a steal just for the chairs and you can get a table to match, something like that other photo only nicer.

I love both of those tables!

I really like the table with the painted legs - the $250 one ;)

There has been some progress on this but one part is an unmitigated disaster on my part. After buying vintage for 40 years, I grabbed up the chairs, only to bring them home and realize they have not enough stamina to be used. Pretty sure that restoration would leave them still shaky at best.

I do love the table, it has 2 more leaves. She had waxed the top, and I am a bit concerned about the general appearance as it has a very matte finish, perhaps I need to adjust to that.

I expected to get end chairs, the plaid ones are intended for my sewing room, another project.

Possibly I am taking on too much, but for now knowing this site has been the most discerning and valuable for info. And I thank you all, truly. Beth

Regardless of the chairs, the table certainly suits the space, I would get bamboo blinds for the windows for some texture.

Thanks, I think I would like the bamboo roman type, hung high up. After having cell shades for 21 years, that with simple panels. today had my flooring guy come. We have had serious issues with our engineered hardwood,on a slab. We will be getting LPV. Just need to get a close match? It won't be the same, unless there is a better idea.

Beth the chairs look great with the table! They really aren't salvageable? My folks have very similar chairs, they have held up well, but dad had to re-cane the backs. He got it in sheets already woven.

Something about the light legs on your lovely table and the dark chairs looks off to me. If you keep the chairs perhaps light seat covers would help them blend in. Just noticed you do have a perfect cushion on one of them. The location where you found the table really took me back - years ago I lived in Elk Grove.

The cushions are too old, keeping them outside for using IF I decide to have the chairs restored. But they were a lovely velvet, soft blue,

Was thinking it would be better to get chairs that have more structure. Even if these were re glued and bolstered I can't imagine having to warn people or worse have them fall. Will think about it for a few days.

hopefully someone has some ideas about 2 end chairs and 6 side chairs.

Ingrid, I have been here in old town for 37 years. It is just wonderful here now, but the heat,,,,,

Like table with painted legs and the fabric chairs mixed with the wood chairs. But not loving these specific round back chairs.

But the concept of round back wood chairs with upholstered chairs look great here. Disregard green paint and overall traditional vibe in pic. Maybe unifying upholstered chair fabric and fabric on seat of wood chairs would give it a finished yet casual look. I would paint wood chairs the color of the white legs on table to lighten the room

I love the new table....but shouldn't it be turned a quarter turn?

One good thing about having to refinish the chairs is you do have a chance to match them to fabric end chairs, if you can find someone to do it in a way that is worth the trouble.

Perhaps paint those table legs black to coordinate with the bench adjacent. What a great color match in the wood of the chairs and table. It seems I remember a discussion about wobbly chairs and IIRC they used gorilla glue in the joints to sturdy them up. But don't trust my memory! Google it. There must be an easy fix out there.

I like the idea of painting the table legs black, it will ground the table better.

I had a set of pine ladderback chairs from Pier 1 that were collapsing due to the leg framing coming apart. Luckily they only collapsed when I was sitting in them! I would hate to have had that happen to my elderly mother when she was visiting. I glued the dowels back into their slots, but they just broke. In some cases, you need new dowels, (if the end is broken) or in other cases, a screw into the frame and dowel is the best answer. Can only do if the dowel and frame are big enough and solid enough. I'm not saying you can't glue, but a screw into good wood is the best stabilizing answer. Luckily for me I knew a few hobby carpenters who had some stronger wood dowels that I could use on the legs of my chairs, and the tools to make them fit. Sometimes the people who will do the upholstery will also be able to fix them, but make sure they do it properly. Since I screwed in the frames, my chairs have been very stable.

Still somewhat dismayed at my lack of foresight to the condition of the chairs. Will mull over them a bit more until I make a final call. The lady who refinished the table gave me the paint if I want to keep them, that would match the legs of the table.

Bossy, My taste is mostly traditional, but was hoping to lend that more relaxed feeling. The chandelier is a bright French country feel.

I remember KSWL' s basement. That was a bit closer to the feel of the room that I was hoping for.

GrapeFruit, I will need to turn the table, it just looked to give the room a balance this way. Ugh, the unsymmetrical windows make the room look off.

I am going to measure out the whole space later and will start a new thread after a few days as I have travel plans this week. The whole space needs to be looked at from fresh eyes. A lot of work to start the middle of July.

I favor traditional also but wanted to emphasize the fabric matching thing. Your adjacent room def. has a relaxed vibe where the one I posted was a little more uptight, ha. Again, just wanted to focus on what can be accomplished by unifying fabrics using diff. chairs, which I really like. good luck.
