99% dead rhododendron

We have a mature rhododendron that did not entirely survive last summer's heat here in Oregon. It appears about 99% dead, though there are some live shoots at the base and a few at the outer reaches of the plant.

Is there any way to save it? Can we prune it to about 1-2 feet at the base and hope it regrows?

It's an eyesore in the front yard now, so we don't really want to leave it as is.

Thanks for any advice!
