how are the stone shelves supported?

    They are actually engineered 2x4s that are laminated together to create 12" deep 3 1/2" high shelves.They are held in place with 15" bolts that run thru the shelf and are fastened to plates built into the walls. The shelves were then veneered with limestone pebbles. However nowhere are the shelves attached to the granite slabs that created the main surface of the fireplace.
