I wouldn't worry about "gender neutral" colours. Just go for bright and vibrant, and if the kids have favourite colours, take that into account. At that age, I'd have loved a bright yellow dresser, and a blue bed. Heck, I probably still would.

Since they like many different colors, I ultimately decided on painting their wall gray! I'll be painting their dresser for a pop of color also, and adding different colors from other elements (pictures, bedding, etc). I like the idea of making the room colorful while incorporating their interests.
