I apologize. I didn't make myself clear.

The first picture is my present house. We will be selling that house. But we like the trim between the Windows and would like to have the same look in the new house that we will be building. But, i can't remember if it was accomplished with 2 studs or 3 studs between the windows .

So...trying to determine if we should use 2 studs or 3 studs between the windows of the new house.

Use a bigger header, and you can do whatever you want.

Red is trying to get the finished width to look the same as the old house and to do that it is necessary to specify not only the rough openings on the plans but to note the number of studs between the paired windows. This is a design issue not a means and methods of construction issue.

For a 2 stud pocket the finish dimension of the interior trim would be about 5 1/2" wide. For a 3 stud pocket the interior trim would be about 7" wide.

In the photo, if the trim at the far right is about 3 1/2" wide, the trim between the paired windows appears to be no wider than 5 1/2" and is almost certainly not 7" so its pretty clear there are only 2 studs between the windows of the old house.

That means the header above is almost certainly continuous over all of the windows.

I'm not trying to be dense. Is this really something that most architects do not specify for the builder?

here's another picture of my present Windows. The flat trim board is 5 1/4" wide. Do you think there are 3 studs between these Windows. Don't yell at me for asking the same question again.

i know our builder will want specifics. Honestly most builders around here just want to talk you into having your windows factory mulled.

So, my Windows now have 2 studs between the Windows and in my new house it will look the same.

If your builder is competent, all he needs are the dimensions of the finished window treatment. You shouldn't need to instruct the plumber on how to cut piping the right length, to tell the electrician where to run the wiring, or the builder how to frame.

I would also keep in mind the proportions of the rooms, the thickness of the mullions, casing, etc. Even though the trim between the windows looks good in your current house, you need to make sure it works in the new design.

I really like mocking things up full scale with butcher paper, on the site if possible. That gives a good feel for the effect IRL.

The other thing to think about is insulation. You should have something in there, I wouldn't leave it empty.

Measure the current house and take a picture. Show that to the builder and the measurements and they will figure out what ya need.

It LOOKS like 2 studs, which is what we added, but could very well be three. The builder can figure all that out with the picture and info you provide.
