Advice on kitchen layout please!

Hi everyone! Looking for some input/ideas on my kitchen layout. I’m starting from scratch here, doing a full remodel. Was looking to go with Ikea with semihandmade doors. L shaped kitchen with an island. Short wall is about 9’5” and the long wall aiming from 13-14’, but I have some wiggle room there. The sink needs to be on the long wall, I don’t want to move plumbing. The ceilings are 11’ tall. No windows or doors to deal with. Only structural item is a column on the short wall which is creating the 9’5” length. It is actually open past that point, but didn’t want to build a kitchen over a column (maybe I’m wrong?). And I was planning on building a walk in pantry at the end of the long wall, wherever that will end.

Goals are just to have a functional kitchen, with an island to provide more storage. I really like the idea of minimal upper cabinets. In my layout below the open space above the sink and to the R/L of the hood would have open shelves, just couldn’t figure out how to add them in Ikea planner :) Appliances already exist as well, except the fridge: 30” range and 30” dishwasher. Don’t have a sink, but was aiming for 32” single bowl.

I’d appreciate input specifically on the upper cabinets and whether you’d make changes, and also to the island - if anyone has experience in creating one out of Ikea cabinets. I was aiming for a 5’ x 4.5” (that includes a 15” overhang for counter seating on one side).

Thanks! Nicki
