Wanna help me pick out a lamp?

I'm working my way through decorating the family room that we added to our house this year, and I need lamp advice.

How tall should the lamp be for this table?

Sorry for the glare. I haven't gotten window treatments yet. Right now I have the white desk lamp there, but it's moving to a new location and I'd like a table lamp. I'm shopping online and in stores, but I'm sure what size to get. I don't want to overwhelm the not-very-big table, but I don't want it to be too tiny, either.

The table is 22" square. The current lamp is about 18 inches tall right now.

Here's a different angle with slightly better lighting:

The lamps I'm looking at go from 18 inches to 33 inches.

I'd also love input on the lamp or at least the style. I'm going for comfortable with Chinoiserie touches. I've got several blue and white ginger jars on the bookcase to the left of the window. The slipper chair, obviously, is blue and white. The dirty-looking glider is going to be replaced with a medium blue wingback chair next weekend.

The box on the table is a not-quite-navy blue.

At first I was thinking of a ginger jar lamp, something like this:

It's 18 inches tall, and I like it. But there is such a thing as too many blue and white patterns, and it's sitting right next to the patterned chair. Maybe I'd be better off with something geometric, like this:

It's 15 inches tall--too short, maybe??? But I've found other geometric patterns in other sizes.

Or maybe I should just put down the ceramic patterns and walk away slowly. So, a solid? That's more modern?

Or this, which I like a lot:

It's the biggest of the lot at 33 inches tall, but again I can probably track down something similar.

Or, I suppose I could get a white lamp??? Honestly I have no idea at this point. I'd love any advice, as I've reached maximum lamp saturation.

Thank you!

"Maximum lamp saturation"-I know exactly what you mean:)

I think 15 inches going to be too short (unless you put it on pile of books, or a box, or something). I vote either for the first one (I'm not a person to walk away from a pattern on pattern), or for the last one-I like how it brings this transparency with it, being a bit similar yet a bit different. It might be too big, that's true...not heavy visually, but the diameter of the stand might take too much space..do they give specs on it? I would love for it to work out though, it's a pretty lamp.

18 inches looks good right now..maybe something in 18-25 range?

Of course it can be also white lamp, or turquoise, or green, or coffee..or you can make it a standout, and go for hot pink for example. Or orange. That's the thing with the lamps..there are so many of them, and one moment you're at saturation point, but next moment you see yet another cool lamp:)

But if you keep coming back to that blue..probably cobalt blue?..then I can't see why not to have it in a color that truly makes you happy. Especially when it's blue. The sea, the sky..it's really hard to overdo something that is naturally always around us anyway.

Scarlet red would be totally amazing as an accent, I must agree with Ingrid. Whether in a lamp or not.

I'd wait until you get the other chair in place. Right now, with a short chair and a taller chair, and also a tallish table, you're going to have work hard to balance the lamp to work with all 3 pieces. A lamp that works in scale with the taller chair might dwarf the slipper chair, which is a little short next to the table already. Without seeing the rest of the room, I might move the slipper chair away from the table and find a smaller scale floor lamp, maybe like a pharmacy lamp to use with it (or leave it lampless) and scale the table lamp to work with the wing chair and table as a grouping. Maybe put some little nesting tables with the slipper chair?

This is all awesome advice. I'll take some photos of the rest of the room later this morning. I do have some pops of a scarlet red/orange going on here and there that I intend to reflect in some pillows. As soon as I get around to pillows.

I honestly hadn't thought about the tall chair and tall table with the short chair. That will require pondering!

OK, photos shortly. You guys are amazing.

I love that white table, it has good character but it is too tall for the chairs and overwhelms the slipper chair. I'd put a smaller table there and move the white one,let it stand on its own.

OK, photos of the whole room.

Here you can see the slipper chair and then the corner and the door to outside. I'm thinking of putting a tall plant under the prints next to the door, and I want a decent-size rug in front of the doors.

Turning to see into the kitchen area. That fan is temporary--the AC should be fixed by the weekend. I have a new planter on order for the ponytail palm--more blue and white!

(Oh, and that's Abigail. She likes to help.)

Facing the far wall now. I plan to replace the big armchair, since that one is impossible to keep clean but with something similar in shape and size since that's my husband's crash zone. The throw on the chair needs to be retired. I need some pillows, definitely. Dog crate in the corner--a necessity, alas, but I need to put a cover on it or something. Maybe a solid surface top and then another lamp could go there???

The wall behind the sofa will be a gallery wall. I'm collecting prints--again lots of blues and white with pops of orange and red.

Here's the bookcase in the corner. You can see the orange foo dogs--I love them. I need one more jar/vase, and I want it to have the scarlet.

And back to the chairs in front of the window. For window treatments, I'm thinking woven wood roman shades in a darkish brown to pick up the color from the floor.

I would love to put a rug under the whole seating area, but between the dog, two cats (one of whom seems to have kitty bulimia), and teenaged boy I worry about keeping it clean. I'm horrified every time I mop or sweep. I'm planning on getting an indoor/outdoor rug for in front of the french doors so I can periodically hose the thing off.

So there's the big picture. Any input on the lamp or anything else would be greatly welcomed. This room and the adjoining kitchen are brand new--we added 330 feet to our century-old bungalow. The back of the house was a dark grungy utility room before now. I LOVE it. Thank you!

I would use just the new wing chair and table. I think of furniture in front of a window as a vignette, so I want all the pieces to go together. So, matching chairs, and if you don't have them, one chair set up to look like a reading spot.

I like lamps with a glass base in front of windows so they don't block the window so much. My lamp is 26" and I wouldn't go any taller than that.

Edit--your photos came in after my post. I think a demilune table might be nice in front of the window. Your room is very furniture heavy as it is, so lighten it up with the new arrangement.

When you get the new chair, I might switch places with it and the slipper chair and make the slipper chair a part of the arrangement with the couch/armchair. Then skootch the wingchair as far to the right as possible, maybe angled a bit toward the couch area, a bit away from the window if possible, with the table to the left of it, then figure out your lamp. It's a sweet room!

I too think that red would an excellent choice for a table lamp in your pretty room.

This one may be a bit too tall, but I like it ... Or perhaps at least something similar to this.

I also like this one, which is more of a coral color (and at 23", shorter than the one above).

Being honest, I'm having a hard time w/the 3 pieces of furniture together to start, as gorgeous as they, adding a lamp w/an Asian theme is just going to add to ramping up the mis-matchedness IMO.

I would get a piece of plywood cut to fit the top of the table and skirt it, then the tablelamps like above would look lovely on a skirted table.

Also, a man-made polypropylene rug is your friend w/pets and teens.

I love the table and the 18" blue lamp. I don't think you need a red pop of color

what I I would do is pull the two chairs (same scale for both like the slipper chair) in front of the table. The table is too tall to be beside the slipper chair but slightly behind and the table would work. Kind of like a sofa table is usually higher than an end table.

i would think that as is, if you sit in the chair the table is at an odd height, pushing it back and having similar sized chairs should make the table work

This is all great input. I think I'll take the suggestion to hold off until I get the wingback chair next month. Then I'll play around with the arrangement of the furniture around the window. I see what you're all saying about the scale of the table and the two chairs. I have other tables that are smaller that I could try in that spot.

Thanks so much! I'll revisit the lamp decision once I've got the furniture worked out.

I agree that waiting until you get the other chair. I like the blue glass of the ones you posted but not the height of it. If you will still have the blue box there you might want to go with clear glass.

I agree, maries1120. I keep going to back to the glass, but I'll have to find one that's shorter.

While I wait to get my chair (I'm buying it from a friend who is moving, and I can't pick it up until the middle of July), I'm starting rug shopping. I think that's going to be a great place to add a pop of scarlet.

Here's one from Lamps Plus that is almost 18" - soft blue or clear.
