Screening Help

last modified: 10 years ago

I had originally posted in the landscape forum but it was suggested I post here for better response.

I've got a nice long fence in the back that I want screened fast!

The right side I want to be evergreens for year round screening (basically blocking the view from their shed over to the right). I think I would need a minimum height of 10-12 feet to make this possible.

The center area can be deciduous for summer screening (blocking from the shed to the left) but I still need some height to block out the building structures. Also note there are two oaks over on that side of the yard that may limit light.

The left area I am not too concerned about at this point at as the oaks seem to block that area fairly well and I will likely plant some large shrubs or small trees to screen the fence.

This is a view from my deck

This is a sideview along the fence

This is something I had in mind but am open to suggestions!! Also, this was made with a free app and I'm not even sure if this could actually work with current lighting conditions and space.

Info:

The length of the fence is about 85feet. The area up to the point where the tree is growing through the fence (about halfway - 40feet) gets full sun.

i don't mind medium/large trees that require space as I plan on extending a garden out about 15-20 feet from the fence...with that being said, I need trees with deep roots that won't fight with my plants (hosta!) or lift the fence.

I only have trees in my little design but I'd also love some ideas for shrubs to include as well.

I was thinking of having two Green Giants with a Wichita Blue in front, having an Ivory Silk Lilac (I know they're not rapid growing but I really would love to incorporate one into the design) and having a larger deciduous with low growing branches that could grow without full sun (maybe a River Birch?).

I'm in Welland Ontario with a hardiness zone of 6b. We have a lot of clay soil.

EDIT: I also want to throw out that I don't mind waiting a few years for the screening to take affect. I'd just rather not wait 25 years when it's time to downsize and I don't have time to enjoy it. I really want the feeling of nature as well. Ideally the whole left side of my property will all be garden with a gravel pathway - no grass. My love for trees likely comes from growing up with a forest as my backyard.
