Air Compressor Won't turn back on

I have a 1970ish 5 gal, 1/2hp belt driven unit. It cycles on but trips its breaker after it shuts off and attempts to turn back on. I can feel air flowing back through the reed valve. Is this causing the breaker to trip because the startup amperage is exceeding it's limit possibly due to a faulty check valve?

What is the pressure in the tank when the motor tries to restart? Does the motor turn at all when this happens? The motor could be weak on start-up/low initial RPM and draw excessive current at that time. If it has an external capacitor, that may have failed and is causing this.

It seems like your backflow valve is not working (check valve), as you suspect. The motor is trying to restart in a loaded condition. Test the check valve by disconnecting the line from the pump to the tank after it shut off. There should be no air escaping from the valve.
