Although 5 gallon is not ideal size but at this stage plant should not become root bound. Tomato plants grow near surface roots even in the raised bed and in the ground.

I would add more soil and mulch on top up to the brim.

There is no way of knowing that without seeing the plant. We have no idea how old or well established the plant is so it could easily be root bound as the OP has said.

How did OP established it that the plant is root bound ?

How can you tell the plant is root bound, w/out actually pulling it out of the container ?

Question to growlove 21 : When did you put the plant in the bucket ?

Sorry just got off work I would have responded sooner. I did not pull the plant out but after looking up symptoms of exposed roots reaching out of the top soil (not actual top soil) I made the assumption it was root bound. Being that I can also see roots at the bottom through drainage holes, altough that doesn't mean it's root bound per-say. So really it could be either I was asking more as a generalization because it will happen to all of them soon enough:( both your answers added to my knowledge on the subject so thank you!

I transplanted the tomato in question on June 1st. It has well over trippled in size and is showing signs of container stress (pig tailing, leaf roll) I'm worried because I'm just now letting it bloom, I was following pruning advice meant of ground tomatoes not container haha oh well next year is going to be much better:)

Your plant looks fine and I don't think it has over grown its container .

What variety is it ?

I did't think it's over grow yet either that's why I was surprised to see roots! That one is my chocolate sprinkles cherry tomato. Its indeterminate and from now on I think I'm only going to grow determinate types in containers. It really makes more sense all around IMO.

how did this turn out for you? did you replant?
