Yes or no to area rug

Not sure about area rug over carpet. How does this look? (Don't mind the dog) too big or small? Or does it even go with my living room? Clueless

Not sure if you have a coffee table and removed to show the rug? If you don't have one, I would skip the rug and add a great coffee table and accessorize for interest and it will add more to your room than a rug. Have you ever tried other seating arrangements - couch centered under windows vs the love seat which is off centered. I would add colorful art between the windows and rethink the pillows - mixing patterns/solids in complimentary colors to the art and then the colors will pull the room together.

@maureen I did try that when we first moved a couple months ago, and didn't think it looked quite right.. I will try again and post to see what y'all think.

I do not have a coffee table, just the ottoman. I will look into getting one
  • 10 years ago
I like the rug, color and texture is. I'd like to see what coffee table you use. I'm not sold on buying a larger rug. I might suggest wood rather than glass. You are doing a nice job. Monochromatic color stories with soft accents is fine. I would suggest placing a vertical painting (same width you have there-just longer and with more of a color story where you have 3 smaller pieces. Also, between both couches you need a tall and more dramatic lamp on your side table. Good design has waves of high and low points Most people design in one or two horizontal (visual) lines around a room
    Good job

Honestly, I thought it looked cozy with neutrals mixed. The olive pillows at right, sorry not with the throw [one or the other?]. So what if the rug is a little small.

Seems that a deeper tone in the middle could help anchor it all?

Too many small patterns competing with each other in this room.

I wouldn't return it... especially without trying it moved diagonally... why not.

Do you curtains have grey / a blue-grey?

I prefer rugs be large enough to slip under the front 1/3 of the sofa so they really ground the seating. They should extend past the ends by at least a foot or more.

I like that 3rd rug and your dog! Ollie seems hopeful.

    woof [means 'like']!!!

@grover - love your dog! Lol. And thank you for the suggestions- I do like those rugs as well, I'm just scared if I get a colored rug it may not always go. For instance christmastime, fall time, etc.
Here is the new rug I picked up. What are everyone's opinions? I agree with the statement with too many patterns. If I keep this rug would I just need to get solid pillows? Or perhaps solid drapes?

no you could support other patterns

Now another look could be a table with metal legs....

For those who mentioned changing the couch and love seat- here it is. It doesn't work well because the furniture is too big that way. Almost blocks off the entrance at front . (Don't pay attention to the rug this way, didn't center it with this arrangement)
@everdebz - I just chose a rug I thought would be neural for when I chose to use different colors for different seasons. Also looked for a coffee table but haven't found one today.

Here's a close up of curtains and picture in the middle of Windows and also with the furniture rearranged with couch on the window wall but not centered.

Your curtains have an organic / natural look, so the haphazard lines in rug, yes? Have you considered placing the 3 pieces going 'up the stairs'?.... idea.

Love this coffee table, would look great on that lovely rugs with the lines. You don't have to add much to incorporate a pop of colour or spend much like in picks. Art is a great way, vases, lampshades, pillows. It will be fun and look interesting

Yes to her post - mixing another look with metal/wood adds some excitement! .... Your dogs love it. :)

Yes. The pattern and color of the rug relieves the tan/beige hue of the carpeting and the sofas. Add an accent color in some accessories and art.
@ever - I'm confused to your '3 pieces going up the stairs?' Yes, the curtains are almost sheer like.
The whole idea of the rug was to pull the space together and add some color, however I think I may be making it harder!

@blend- I do like that table and those pictures! I love all the pics I see on here yet somehow can't get the same look
  • 10 years ago

If you want more pronounced color by the seating, you could hang the current 3 pieces that are in between the windows in the stairwell, making room for one piece of art. I like canvases which aren't expensive - Home Goods.

I love your drapes! The soft Colors are beautiful
  • 10 years ago

i am trying very hard, but i seen no color in your rug choices, they are black and white, neither is a color.

We're merely looking at a photo of your room, but it seems the 3 pieces have little impact. I'd get a canvas with more color for there. What's beyond over to the left? :)

swrackley, the new rug looks fine. The curtains, striped pillows, and throw are fine. The odd men out are the olive pillows. Replace them with something more sage-like, a green with less yellow and more blue.

The extra pictures of your room are very helpful. Before deciding on a rug or a coffee table, I would definitely be moving the furniture around so you purchase the right sizes/shapes. Your room has valuable space making it feel heavy on one side. Try couch and love seat facing each other and your console under the mirror (or between the windows or behind the couch). Where console was, add a large piece of art. Or try l-shaped, but move into the room/closer to fireplace (and play around with console). You could use your ottoman as a coffee table and add a tray, but if purchasing a table, suggest a lighter distressed piece. Once room is accessorized, you may not feel you need a rug. Try your small lamp on the console and if you can, purchase a larger one for the side table. There seems to be a blusish/grey in your drapes, so maybe use that color vs turquoise. Have a color palette in mind when shopping and bring home lots of items to test how they work and compliment your drapery, as it's really your starting off point (and I would stretch/widen out a bit so they look fuller and hide the window frame).

I agree--the room has unused space. Try moving furniture away from entrance and more into room. Maybe make the fireplace more of a statement by putting sofas there.

Thank you Nancy and Maureen -- we have tried the sofas facing each other, however it blocks the entrance to the kitchen - so it may would work if our sofas weren't as large. We are looking for a chair to place to the left of the fireplace and maybe jay will help equal out the room.

If you're not going to use the rug to add color, then you really don't need it. Return it and go bare carpet instead.

Put the TV to the left of the fireplace behind the new chair, patch the niche, and hang art.

I bought this coffee table- does it look any better in here? Or would you go with a bigger ottoman?
  • PRO
IMO the big problem before was monochromatic with no contrast in material or color. This coffee table helps on both counts.
Ok I know this post was about the rug- but I've taken them both back seeing as they didn't add color, and bought 2 new, bigger end tables, and a coffee table instead of the ottoman. And put the sofa in front of the Windows (can't be centered) but provides more room if I need a chair. Still need lamps but here it is so far- does this look any better?
Dear, you have the problem that many encounter when they buy sofa with matching loveseat- not enough space to accommodate both. You room could work beautifully with two chairs- one on stairway wall and the other near corner by fireplace. Then the larger sofa would center the window with your pretty draperies. Do you possibly have bedroom or basement space for the loveseat?
Sorry I got so far off subject. You do have a nice beginning.

I can't tell what is behind the ottoman, but I might try putting the rug on the diagonal so the corners are under the edges of the furniture.
Then, try the ottoman parallel to the long side of the rug so the seating group is a triangle. Adjusting how much of the rug is under the edges and close the ottoman is to the rug will allow you to adjust the size of the seating area. I have done this with smaller rugs and smaller scale seating areas and it has worked well.
Go with what pleases your eye. The softness is very gentle on the eye.

The coffee table without a rug is much, much better. You can stick a colorful bowl or a candlescape or plant on it for color.

Its a little small and defiantly need some contrast. Maybe an ottoman or coffee table in the center. A circle or oval to break up all the straight lines. Try a mix of metal and and wood.
So much better than the rug idea!

i don't seem to have a rug? and i love color, i do not compare to floors, those always go they are necessary.

I don't have an app to depict my input. But here goes. I still like the idea of using a rug to anchor and define the space. It ok if it's on carpeting if it makes you happy. I'd use one a bit more colorful and in sage tones- someone posted some options earlier in thread. Perhaps an 8x10. Centered. I would use a larger coffee table. Square or circular. The things I placed on side tables depicts the size of lamps, when you are ready to buy. The height will also help visually balance that your couch is not centered. All good things take time before its done. I support you in your 2 couches. Nothing is perfect in life and I think you have done a good job
