Counter space and a view
We took the plunge and gutted our kitchen. It had been renovated by the previous owners and looked pretty good but we found the function of it was dreadful having little to no true counter space. The longest run of counter was less than 30 inches on either side of the sink and either side of the range. The range was in the island and after only a few months I discovered how much I dislike working at the range with people surrounding me. The bar height island was great socially but became very confined unless you were working in the kitchen alone.
We removed everything and, against the advise of a kitchen designer, opted to have a one walled kitchen. We wanted to extend the kitchen into an area we had felt was under utilized - more of a walk way to our deck than anything.
We imagined a space that would maximize our outdoor view and a long span of counter. We had always wanted a wood counter and felt this could be a bit of a show stopper (at least for us).
We don't know if it goes against designer rules for kitchens but what we do know is that we love it and its exactly what we wanted. We love working in the kitchen. Preparing meals and looking out the windows is pure joy. We have loads of storage space and find it a dream to clean up. Not having upper cabinets has been an easy transition for us. It may not work for some but it has been a great decision for us.

We are very pleased. We have all our plates/bowls in a drawer which has proven to be ideal and very accessible - even more so than in an upper cabinet I find. We have opted not to have a lot of decorative things on the shelving just stuff we use regularly. Pots, pans around the range. Glasses by the dishwasher and refrigerator as well as the large bowl which we use almost daily as our salad bowl. The back wall has our coffee covered as well as baking as the drawers below house all the baking supplies. Opposite the large window, on the back wall of the kitchen, we have an old cabinet I refer to as our mason cabinet. I house baking needs and spices in mason jars which I have done for years and now have a space to have them out for easy access.Thanks for the nice feedback.
