Stubborn fruit punch cherries that haven't ripened yet...

Other cherries doing just fine...

Thank you for that - just what I needed to hear! And of course, Murphy's Law, they started ripening the day after I posted this. Looking forward to a good harvest this year - hope you manage to keep the birds away from yours!

You've got ripe tomatoes, that doesn't sound like Murphy's law at all! Unless you really didn't want them to ripen?

Nice job with those cherry tomatoes. you can buy those plastic green tomatoe stakes from Lowes for just a couple bucks.

ak_ok(6b) - Ha! Murphy's Law in that the minute I was feeling uncertain the tomatoes ripened. Typical - and a good reminder to worry less.

Anthony, thanks! I've got some of those bamboo stakes that I've been placing strategically around the pot, and then trellising (is that a word?) the tomatoes back down. As per the advice of a gardener friend will give them a "haircut" in mid-July for more domestic-sized plants. But yes, they're getting a lot of love (and fertilizer, and compost).

The problem with indeterminate tomatoes in pots is that while the roots may be perfectly happy, the growth habits far outstrip the space available on a deck or patio. In the ground these plants need some discipline, pruning, and vertical training. But all of that requires substantial external structures. Which kind of defeats the purpose of the containers. Now, you don't have to do anything, and if you don't mind having your patio turn into a tomato jungle for a couple of months then there is nothing to worry about. However, if you want to keep these upright, you will need more staking structure than the containers themselves can support.

Can you attach some poles to that deck fencing that you cab use to stabilize the plants?
