Need help on deciding on capacity size for front load washer.

Hello Everyone!

I have just purchased a brand new home. The new home comes with a top load washing machine and matching dryer.

The top load is nice but I would really prefer to have a front load washer. The company that installed the washer and dryer will give me credit for both if I replace them with something from their store.

I am not sure what capacity size I need on a front load. I need one that will comfortably wash and dry a king sized comforter. I hate taking it to the laundry mat or dry cleaners and figure the money I save not having to wash it at the laundry mat will more than make up the extra money a bigger machine will cost me.

I am currently looking at a Samsung 5.0 Cubic ft washing machine with add wash. Add wash is not a big deal to me but it comes with the machine I am looking at. Will 5.0 cubic ft be big enough to wash a normal fluff filled comforter? Do you think I could drop down to a 4.5 cubic ft? The price difference between the 2 sizes is pretty considerable and if I can save a few dollars I would like too.

I have a budget of about $3000 but that has to include pedestals for the machines as well.

Thank you for reading and I look forward to your opinions.

Avoid Samsung. I have never heard a good review from anyone who has one. LG and Whirlpool are MUCH better. My Duet has 3.9 cu. ft. of capacity and I can just fit my brothers large queen sized comforter.

My Duet is 4.5. I believe I can comfortably fit a queen of medium thickness (not down) comforter, I could fit king blankets or spreads but not king comforters.

Remember if you choose to buy a massively large washer you will also need to do very large loads of laundry otherwise you will be dealing with spin issues.

If you use a duvet cover on your comforter which is washed weekly you only need to wash your comforter every 3-4 months.

My Whirlpool Duet is 4.5 and I regularly wash king-size bedding in it. My new comforter, though, is an over-size king and recommends a commercial washer. Since I live in Phoenix, the comforter doesn't see much use. The blankets or quilts, though, are washed every week or two.

Moroseaz are you able to wash a king size comforter?

Yes, just not the one I have now.

You should consider all of your loads. When I did I realized that the small compact washers were perfect except for the queen size comforter (sheets were no problem). It did not make sense to buy a large washer for one item.

By the way, I weighed my laundry on a luggage scale so I knew how big the loads were. Some machine list load capacity by weight, others by volume.

    Thank you for the replies.

My laundry sizes vary. I have 5 people in my home. Some of them actually do loads according to color, some just take the weeks worth of clothes and do one load lol. I have 4 Queen size beds and one king size bed. We have animals so all bedding is done once a week to cut down on the hair building up on our comforters.

I wash a lot of rugs. I do my rugs in front of the doors and in the bathrooms once a week. They are really hard on a top loader but with the new larger capacity front loader I am hoping to be able to comfortably wash the rugs as well. I live in Florida and between summer rains and sand the rugs are dirty in no time.

Before I moved here I had a Whirlpool Duet with steam front loader set. I loved it and actually thought about buying the set again but while I could wash a queen sized comforter in it I was stuffing it in and I am almost positive that they could not handle a good sized filler king comforter without possibly over loading it.

Samsung seems to be one of the few companies that make larger sized machines. I will have the 5 year warranty on them plus my appliances will be included in my home warranty as well so while I hope I have no issues maybe this will at least cover any repairs needed.

    Again Thank you.

It can be a challenge for any front-loader to balance and spin heavy rugs, even if more than one is washed at a time.

If you're looking at a larger machine, consider the LG wm8000 and newer 90000 as well as the Kenmore Elite 41072. The 8000 and 41072 at 5.2cu. Ft are Tier 2 machines and are real workhorses. I have the Kenmore and regularly wash large quilts and King and Queen size bedding. The Samsung has lots of bells and whistles, but look at the overall build quality. I saw a lot of plastic and easily dented sheet metal. Friends also complain of blistered finishes and rust forming on machines in garages. This might be a consideration in your tropical climate. With several people using the machine, I go for simplicity, not easy to break components. Good hunting.
