Would you consider a quartz counter? I'm thinking a solid counter and ceramic or glass tile, both in a similar color, in a tone pulled from the floor. Cream would be safe, but a cooler color might work too, if you like those tones... a pale green or gray?

Yes these are ones we were considering but that was before this floor was decided. We are artists so we want everything to be beautiful but we definitely don't want it to be too busy or confusing.

Yes the first is quartzite. I really love that one. I'm intrigued by the idea of going dark, I don't think soapstone is as durable as I would like. We have young children. I'm worried about the room being too dark. I like the matte glass, could I do white or would I do a cream or color represented on the floor? Thanks for the help!

Cream cabinets look good with either floors. Your gray will work will any floor.

Your countertops and backsplash should be simple, clean and light colored in order to open up your kitchen a bit. Make sure not to pick something rich with patterns because you already have it enough on your kitchen floor. Perhaps something like this for the quartz countertop - Haiku or White Dune.

And for simple backslash would you suggest a subway tile? White? I've been attracted to the hexagon tiles but maybe that's too much? Can I go white or should I do an off white? What about the suggestion of grey or green?

If you're using a quartzite like the first photo, a white MIGHT make the counter look dingy. This is glass tile from Fireclay (color is Hydrangea) to show you how a glass might give the same kind of etched translucent 'feel' as a quartzite.

This is a Pratt and Larson green watercolor glaze tile. Their watercolor glaze is a high variation glaze, as this pic shows. Her counters are dark green granite. Does this feel too dark for you? If so, as several have pointed out, you might want to take a look at some light quartz options.
