OK, so I have an 81" long island with an off center sink in it. The over-sized pendants I want to use have a 16.75 diameter. I only want to use 2 of them - breaking the "rule of 3", because of their size and also the island isn't so huge.

My electrician wants to center them on the kitchen counter either side of the sink, which to me is just going to make the island look odd & wonky.

Surely I simply hang them equally spaced. I've calculated that to be perfectly centered, they would be 20 & 1/4 from either end of the island counter on center. But that would mean that the fixtures would only be 23 & 3/4 apart, when typically pendants should be 30" apart at least. So if I need to follow that rule, they would be 17 & 1/8 centers from either end of the island. Here's the drawing of what I calculated:
