You have a nice neutral area there - all it needs are a few splashes of color - for example, some art on the walls, cushions or a throw on the sofa, and a few bright pieces on the bookshelves. Perhaps some of the photos could be reframed in colors rather than the neutrals they're in now. I think a larger and colorful area rug would help, as well. The bookcase to the left of the mantel looks empty: some random books, a bowl or two, things like that - would give it a bit of pizzazz. I don't think you have to fill up the room with color, but a few selected pieces would make all the difference.

First, you will want to paint your walls and ceiling with a light color that goes with your furnishings, rug, and accessories. Next, you will want to purchase white or off white linen drapes. Those things will help lighten the room a lot along with some light colored throw pillows. Do you have more light in the room besides the light on the ceiling fan? If not, I would get at least 2 table or floor lamps to help brighten the room.

Bring in color from a favorite piece of fabric or accessory. My favorite color is bright red, but I know that is a very strong color so I just use it in my accessories (couch throw, table accents, art frames).

Layers of lighting will be your friend. Start with a large wall sconce or table lamp in each corner at chest height. Educate yourself about lighting. For starters, there's ambient, task, and accent. It looks as though you have light from the ceiling and from a small lamp. I do agree with the other person who said more lighting from table lamps and/or floor lamps. I also think the lighting from the ceiling may be wrong if you want more light; either the fixture or the bulbs, I can't tell. Do you have any windows in that room? If so, have shades that are light or allow light to come through. Sheer white curtains would be great as well.
I like the contrast of the white walls with the dark floor and furniture.
