Front door colour - Red or Black

Have just repainted house and trim - front door is red currently but not right colour of red - I think need a red with a black base or alternatively go with a glossy black door in same colour as trim. Thoughts? In looking through Houzz pics black on black seems to arise only when there seems to be a white accent. Attached are two pics of current look. Will black on black make it two closed in even if door glossy black. Help please - painter is back on Monday.

Both red and black would look good but I would paint the sidelights the same color as the door. This will widen the look of the entrance. My preference would be black and then have a couple of urns out front with red flowers.

I think the shade of red is perfect. Paint the side lights red as well and add black urns with greenery. It will look stunning!

Love RoseAbbey's suggestion...all black with urns and red blooms.

I suggest painting the side lights the same as the door to make it appear wider. My color choice would be a very intense red--what used to be called Chinese red.

Paint it black like the sidelights. If you choose another red, paint the door and the sidelights the same.

Try BM csp Modern Romance for the red if you choose to go in that direction. I think it will look beautiful against the color of the stucco. Big difference from what you have now.

These CSP colors are amazingly gorgeous. They are formulated as are the European colors...no black used in the mix, so it is a true full-spectrum color.

I have been using the colors more often on my jobs and I am more than pleased with the results.

I would keep the front door red but also paint the sidelights red as well! I had my exterior doors painted with Behr Marquee Fire Cracker in semi-gloss and they look great!

i like the door color kinda modern, but all black would look good too. depending on the style you like i could see blue as well. also update your lights to complete the look.

I'm sticking with my comment about black being the best choice. However, if you go with a red, I would consider the Modern Romance Judy suggested or something similar. I think your current door color is too warm a red with the cool stucco color.

I'm not a fan of red doors. Given this situation I would paint the door black.

Your door color might be Frank Lloyd Wright's Cherokee Red. http://www.ppgpittsburghpaints.com/color/paint-colors/harmony/wright-cherokee-red-taliesin-west-fllw68

I think that is is a good choice and also agree to paint the sidelights the same color.

I disagree on painting the sidelights ,if ou paint them it will be too much red or whatever colour you have decided on , let the door alone be the center of attention the focal point of your home .

I'd go with black. Whatever color you choose, you should paint the sidelights the same color.

Can you post a photo of your whole house? I think an earthier color for your front door and sidelights. The style of door may not fit your style of home, but can't tell at this point. Do you like highlighting your garage door? Perhaps paint it the base color of the house, then your entrance will be the focal point. Add colorful potted plants or succulents. What part of the country are you located?
Add larger lights, but can't tell the style until we see the house.

I think this can best be summed up in lyrics to and old Rolling Stones song...
"I see a red door and I want it painted black"

Now that I've had the song "paint it black" running through my head since breakfast ... I'm sending a lovely picture to inspire!

Side light color now that I've studied over 50 pics online might look better not in black.
Too much ( in my humble opinion) may appear to look like a huge hole and harsh looking. I do lots of art painting and help friends and family with color and scale.... I've never disappointed anyone to date!
