I have a bunch of string blocks to do something with also. I love them. They make such interesting quilts. 5 finished string quilts show that you have lots of other quilts done too!

I am ready for some string block making. Lots of scraps in the baskets. Love yours.

Thank you all for your kind comments. I donate to my local Pallative Care Unit. String blocks are so much fun and you can do all the planning you want and it won't do really any good because everything works, they all look good in the end. Here is my method: Nice thin thrift store sheets cut into either 8 1/2 or 9 inch blocks. I make 24. Cut yourself a bunch of strips any width you like (I do 1 1/4 - 2") I like my first diagonal strip to be the same color on all blocks as this makes the diamond pattern when the blocks get sewn together. I draw a diagonal line on each block and put dabs of water base school glue along this line to line up my diagonal first strip. These diagonal strips are cut 1 1/4" wide. Then you just sew a variety of strip to each side in a sew n' flip manner until it is covered. The first strip you sew to that diagonal should be a true 1/4" seam. Do this with all your 24 blocks. Next you want to press your blocks and trim them to 8 1/2 or 9" square. Then lay out your blocks to a pleasing setting and sew them together with a 1/4" seam. Next I add a border from cut 2 1/2" strips (same fabric as diagonal strips). I next add a 4 1/2" border and your top is done. Press everything up nicely. My tops finish at around 42-44"x62-64". I make mine to fit a hospital bed with little hangover. Choose your batting and backing and finish her up. Guaranteed pretty!

Nicely done. I have so many scraps, this would be a good use. I have usually given my charity quilts to a women's shelter our church supports - this would still be a good pattern. Thanks!

The matched color of 1st strip & then inner border guarantees a harmonious arrangement; well done!! (Looks less 'scrappy' to me like that & more deliberately designed.)

If you don't mind, I'd like to show these pix (if I can) & share details w/ my Guild (Empire Quilters, in NYC, membership from the tri-state area of NY, NJ & CT). We also do a fair amount of Charity work.

I'm sure they too (my Guild) would love them & appreciate knowing how to make them to share in Charity efforts. Especially since we ALL know how many scraps we all collect; it's a supremely useful way to use them.

I absolutely love string quilts and have made a few myself. Yours are really lovely. I like that sheet from the thrift store idea as a base. I use light weight interfacing.
